The 'shocks' are hydraulic cylinders that connect, by hose, to the accumulators. Adding that hose connection was surprisingly expensive so be happy that the part is durable. One does need to replace the accumulators occasionally. The accumulators lose their nitrogen charge over time and cause the ride to get progressively harsher. Replacing accumulators costs about the same as replacing normal, high-quality shocks. 108/9/10s had a different hydraulic levelling compensator. They, from what I hear, are a bit shocking to replace. I never needed to but several friends replaced theirs with a simpler, less expensive, steel spring used in some 110 models. Yeah, I need to fix that. They decided to decorate the driver's door of the 190D for me - but since I waxed it somewhat recently, the egg all came off with water, soap, and a wipe of a sponge. those kids are lucky I didn't catch them.
