I just changed the oil in my "new" '91 300D with the 2.5L Turbo Diesel and decided to see if that ASD locking differential really worked... so I decided to go up the hill... I quickly learned two things. 1) a mercedes sedan does not have very good ground clearance 2) a mercedes sedan does not flex or articulate. However, once I realized that I couldn't approach the hill the way I do in the Jeep, I did invoke some wheelspin and was able to keep both rear tires on the ground... and sure enough I went up the hill with a yellow triangle light up on the dash. Got to the top of the hill where I really knew I'd have ground clearance issues and tried to pick a line (it's dark outside, around midnight ;) that would permit me to miss the big rut and the fence... well, slowing down caused me to get in trouble in the wet grass... Michelin MXV4's are great on the road, even wet roads and they do so so in snow... but in wet grass they are totally useless... and that's when I learned that the rear locker was really a locker, as I gave it some throttle the entire rear end of the car started heading for points of trouble... so I rolled back down the hill a bit, gave it some throttle and managed to avoid any body damage or an embarrassing stuck in the field. :) I don't plan on taking this thing wheeling again, but it sure was pretty cool. It's not like the 123 hp 168 ft pound 5 cylinder 2.5 liter turbo Diesel is going to actually spin it's tires or anything... well, maybe wet roads... :) http://www.wagoneers.com/DieselBenz/91-300d-2.5L/ later, john - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... My upgrade thoughts are to a CD/MP3 player. I can fit 10 CD's onto an MP3CD with no noticeable loss of quality, using Exact Audio Copy software and Variable Bit Rate MP3 compression. I hate the idea of a mechanical changer. As soon as I find a plug in solution for the '79 TD I'm getting one for my wife. A Blaupunkt with 40W/Channel can be had for <$200 at Costco. It's not like my Jeeps where I can string GPS, CBs, and assorted chargers all over the place and still have room for my Latte. :) My J10 has that am/fm/sw cassette deck with a cd changer, so the idea of having a changer and a cassette appeals to me. Although I will say that CDs are a lot nicer then cassettes since I don't have to wait for a tape to forward. ;) I'm going to look for a used CD changer that will work with this car since it's supposedly pre-wired for it. I think it would be cool. This car is a class act, nicest Benz I've ever had. The newest one too. Let's see, I had an '83 in '99, 16 years, this one is ONLY 13 years old. ;) john At 08:29 AM 7/27/2003 -0700, Greg Fiorentino wrote: >At 09:55 PM 7/26/03 , john wrote: >>Found out the '91 300D sitting in my carport is >>pre-wired for a CD changer to mate to the stock factory >>radio... >> >>Any idea where I can get one and what I can expect to pay >>for it? >> >>By any chance is it compatible with something I could buy >>normally??? > >My upgrade thoughts are to a CD/MP3 player. I turned out to be that valve on the firewall (acronym beginning with A). After about an hour time investment, elbow grease, and solvent degreaser, the gray beast is back running great. Wow! What a difference a turbo makes : ) John, your E-Class 2.5 looks sweet. When I bought my SDL, I was looking for an E-class with the large fuel tank option. Road and track tested one of those some time ago, driving from LA to San Francisco. They were able to go over 800 miles on one tank of fuel! I would love to have one of those although I can't imagine my bladder holding up to an 800 mile leg ; ) Regards, Richard Arnold '87 300 SDL '73 Alfa Spider ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jul 2003 14:59:15 -0400 From: Robert Chase Subject: Re: looking for a CD changer I usually bring my Ipod in my 300SD. I went to Pensacola beach and was able to listen to continuous music with no gaps or stops while changing CD's. Robert.
