I'm in desperate need of replacing my left lower ball joint. I purchased the part, for $40. I called a local alignment shop to get a quote to have them put it in. They said it'll take about 3 to 4 hours, costing $250 (they align the car, too) My mechanic said he'll do it for about $160, taking 2.5 hours, no alignment included. Another shop wants only $120, but if the control arm is already removed. What's the best route I should take, for the money? This is for my 116 Mercedes. It really sounds like you have a compression problem, and low compression in the volvo diesel will cause it to not start (and if by some act of god you do get it started, it runs like crap), even though you have juice to the glow plugs. Check your compression, if the compression is fine, you might check the IP timing to make sure the person who replaced it didn't do something stupid. Good luck... Mozilla is free and is a much better product. It also has a pop up blocker and also allows you to block images from certain servers IE ads.doubleclick.net . The spam filter is next to bullet proof and learns new spam tactics on the fly. They even have versions for virtually any operating system. Works best on unix though. www.mozilla.org Robert. So I feel safe in making the assumption that it's close to the ones I have experience with. First of all, there should be no need to realign the front end after installing just a new ball joint. It may SEEM like radical surgery, but you aren't changing the centerlines. So when it's all back together, you will still be in alignment (assuming you were ok to start out). On the other hand, if you take out the lower control arm, you WILL need to realign, since you can't remove the lower control arm without upsetting the camber adjustment. The process is brutally simple: the ball joint is a press fit in the lower control arm. But it takes many tons of pressure to push in or out. Without the Benz service tools, the easiest way to do this is to remove the lower control arm and work on a hydraulic press. This will require a wheel alignment afterwards. If your mechanic has the thingamagiggy that allows the joint to be forced out with the control arm in place, then that's the best alternative of the three, since it's out with the old, in with the new and no alignment. But make sure that's the case before you commit. I did this once by pounding the joint in and out. It's cheap, but I can't recommend the procedure.
