It could have jumped timing. It could have had an injector fail. You could have lost the injection pump. The head could have cracked... The smoke color is subtle... the symptoms vague... I'm guessing over a cup of coffee. :) I'd try to disconnect/loosen the injector lines and crank and see if fuel is coming out evenly, wear safety glasses and gloves. If it's pumping evenly, and the oil is normal looking, then I'd pull each injector and examine the bottom to see the color and rattle 'em about to see if they all feel the same. If this is a small 4 banger and you loose ONE injector it'll really be hurting... been there done that... one injector gone will make you think you lost the engine, especially if the other injectors and engine was already marginal... over 25% loss of power... and a bad injector could cause a whitish smoke... my '68 220D did the same thing, but also had bad noises coming from the engine, bad injector... hope this helps... I'd have you drag it down to my shop today, but I think getting it across the panama canal in it's current state could be a bit expensive... ;) john At 06:33 AM 8/16/2003 +0100, Renaud OLGIATI wrote: >Yesterday, my other diesel (Citroen) died on me: > >Started normally, went half a kilometre, and died; at first I thought a >broken >accelerator cable, but that was not the cause. > >Symptoms: > >Unless the accelerator is floored, it does not start. > >With the accelerator floored, it half-catched for a few revs, while spewing >huge amounts of white smoke. > >Tank is three-quarters full, and the priming pump is "hard" when I try it. > >Any idea ? > >Cheers, > >Ron. >-- > I intend to live forever > or die trying. > > -- http://www.olgiati-in-paraguay.org -- - ------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.WAGONEERS.com/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... (With a Citroen, though, it may be some other exotic fluid--but I doubt it.) If it's actually light grey it opens up other possibilities. Blown head gasket is most frequent cause of water in combustion chambers. I would check fluid in radiator, maybe see if you get bubbles when turning engine with starter. Be careful, water doesn't compress and diesels are pretty determined to compress whatever might be in the cylinders. To anthropomorphize, the French car is probably livid that you lavished so much attention on a German machine, simply blew its top. Sorry your cars are demanding this much attention. Paid 5k for it off a lot here in seattle. Seems to be in excellent (well semi good anyway) shape. Has a few dings and a little rust under the drivers door. Alas though it doesn't have a spare. does anyone have a spare spare laying about cheap? I guess all I really need is the rim, but a full spare would be nice. Also, I've never done this type of car before and it is a little less "sporty" then I expected. Nothing I can put my finder on it, but it is a little slow off the line. Is this normal (I mean it is a desiel after all) There is now smoke to speek off. It also has a semi big clunck from first to second when shifting. Again normal? (the power locks all work, but are a little slow going down. I've heard they are tied into the tranny through vacume) I also caught a thread a while back about lubbing the sun roof and how that was a big job. Mine seems to stick just a bit and it sounds like a good lube job is in order. IS it more involved then super greese in the runners? Thanx!~ Wheew glad I've back in a desiel! Hope this thing will give me around 30mph!\ Will post pics in a bit. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Check out www.mercedessource.com for a book and kit on sunroof repair (has the special grease and instructions for a full refurb). I ignored my slow roof for too long and ate the trasmission on it. I have the kit now but since my transmission is toast Ill need a new motor assembly. Anybody know of a good used one? A new one with motor is almost $350. Try a local wrecking yard. I was suprised to see a diesel wagon at the wrecking yard down the street. I NEARLY talked my wife into an '85 TD with 110,000 miles, euro headlamps and all; an absolutely beautiful car. She didn't like the seat adjustments as well as my 126 SDL...yada, yada, yada; too bad. With as car as old as yours, even though low miles, the vacuum connections likely have become dry rotted somewhat. That could account for the rough shift between first and second. My car did all sorts of bad clunky stuff until I fixed the vacuum leaks. Robert is right, get the sunroof book. Once read, you will have a new appreciation for the entire mechanism. Attempting a repair without it can become your worst nightmare, especially if open and won't close! I have an '84 300D with the 617.952 engine. The automatic transmission shifts into 3rd gear at about 20 MPH, making it a very time consuming affair to accelerate to some normal highway speed. All of the shifts are now softer than they have historically been. (might be bad news) I can get good drivability if I start the car with the shifter in "2" and hold it from shifting until about 30-35 MPH at which time I move the shift lever to "D". ATF level is OK, doesn't smell or look burned. Transmission does not seem to be slipping. I've been checking the vacuum to the transmission...about 11 in of Hg at idle and drops to approx 9 in of Hg at ~ 2000 rpm (in park). The hard plastic vacuum tube between my measurement point and the modulator is clean. All other vacuum functions on the car are OK. These symptoms appeared immediately after my recent engine compression testing and re-assembly of the injectors and fuel lines. I initially thought that I had inadvertantly knocked some vacuum stuff loose in all my fiddling around the driver's side of the engine...but doesn't seem so after my vacuum tests. It seems like my favorite car is dying on me.... :-( Steve Morelen '84 300D _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #1165 **********************************
