John- Be careful..I've read in the injection pump section of my 617.952 engine book that the assembly that is bolted on to the top of the injection pump (IP) should never be loosened from the IP unless you are prepared to do a complete set-up of the injection pump. I'm not sure if this warning applies to later IP's. The "tower" assembly contains a delivery valve that can be reworked on my IP....but the fasteners that thread into the IP do not have to be removed to gain access to the delivery valves. There is a copper sealing ring between the delivery valve and the tower assembly that is attached to the body of the IP..hopefully that is the leak source. My book does not have any info on disassembly of the tower assembly from the IP body or how the seal is created. But it was close.... I stopped at a little shopping center on the way home. Got out of the store, turned the key, and ... nothing ... The ignition switch was broken. Not only that, it was stuck in the "on" position. So I popped the hood and started looking for the starter. Where the heck is it, anyway? Must be buried up under the manifolds or something. No manual, no schematics, didn't know what color the starter wire was, where the solenoid was... I found a plastic hood on the R/H fender wall covering a couple of big wires going to big lugs, and a little wire going to a little lug. Just for yuks, I shorted the little wire to the big wire with a pair of long-nose pliers. The starter cranked. Woo hoo! But no start. What was going on? Then I remembered - the "ignition" switch has a vacuum valve in it that goes to the engine shutdown device on the IP. I turned the key to the run position, went back under the hood, shorted the pins... ...vroom! I drove home, and disconnected the battery. I printed out the instructions for R&R of the ignition switch. Wonder if the electrical switch can be replaced without pulling the whole thing out? Checked an online supplier for the switch: $28. Generally speaking, if you can't turn the key enough to the point where the hole is exposed, you are going to be doing major surgery. In a 190D, this requires use of a sawzall and possibly removal of the steering column if you don't have a steady hand :) On something far less elegant than a mercedes (an 81 eagle wagon), I used a pair of big ol pliers to turn the ignition cylinder until the hole was exposed. An eagle has tabs on the side of the ignition cylinder to turn, however.
