The Haynes manual is slightly better than Chilton, will have pictures, can entertain on flight down. Best is the multi-page color spread showing pictures of spark plugs from burnt to oil encrusted. Technical details and setting values should be taken with grain of salt. Have fun on the trip. Take a camera to document the adventure. Hebert" Subject: B2 Piston : The Moral of the Story Well, my B2 band is shot. Gonna have to R&R the tranny. Fix some leaks while I've got it out. Hopefully not run into any more problems. My mechanic says that it looks like it was slipping for a while. All the friction material on the B2 band is gone. The moral of the story: Check your B2 piston. If it hasn't been replaced in the last 150,000 miles, replace it. It's a $100 part that can be installed without removing the tranny. But if yours is failing, it prevents the B2 band from tightening completely on the drum. The drum slips, the band wears, and then you're looking at major work. If the previous owner of this car had replaced it a little sooner, I'd be driving the car now instead of waiting for it. Most of the major brands offer these in the 7 inch round size you need, but I think the preference is for Cibie. These will cost fifty bucks or so per side (and you will really want to do both at once) the first time, but future outages only require an H4 bulb, not a new lens and reflector, and the improvement in lighting performance cannot be overemphasized, especially after you (easily on a W123) tinker with the aim of the lights until you can just barely perceive the horizontal cutoff of the low beams. Or just get any McParts headlamp. While you hear endless tales about special needs for brake lamps, even Mercedes had to abide by US government standards for headlights.
