Driving down I-75 at a nice 80mph pace and suddenly I get a vibration... The vibration gets stronger and stronger and suddenly I realize the front tire has blown out.... Pull over to the side of the road and its flat as a pancake..... Its really hot to the touch though and smoking and it smells bad...... I let it cool off and pull it from the car and notice no holes or any problems with the outside of the tire only a big lump in the side wall.... The last time I got a blow out it was the rear tire on the drivers side this time it was the front tire on the passengers side........ Is there something maybee wrong with my car or are these tires unsafe crap? Each time the tire has blown out I notice a vibration a couple of days in advance.... It strongest at 75mph.... The vibration is just annoying but not normally there...... Could this be a belt slipped loose? Could I have a bad wheel? This is the second blow out I have had and I must say Mercedes really know's how to design a car. I have had blowouts on Japanes cars and have been thrown across 2 lanes of traffic trying to regain control of the car. When I pulled over the car handled fine like there was no problem other than the vibrating front end..... Any ideas? Could I have a bad wheel? Another conspiracy by the French? I stopped having problems with delaminating when I stopped using Michelins on my Alfa Spyder. I've never used them since on anything. If you can live with a 60 width tire then I recommend Nitto tires--I've had amazing service life, traction and smooth riding from Nittos http://www.nittotire.com . I definatly think the Nittos have better wet traction than the Michelins and I live in a place that can get 96 inches of rain a year; this year we only got 54 inches. I'm thinking about a set of 460's for my 240D. They do make an R rated 70 series (470), but I prefer an H rated tire. Before you suggest that a 60 series is wasted on a 240D, consider that I live on Highway 9 in California. That road eats R series tires very quickly; they just get too hot. Besides, half of the road is downhill and I can actually get going fairly fast on that side of the mountain! %^) Paul ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Sep 2003 19:46:13 -0500 From: Jon Filina Subject: Re: [db] Exploding Michelin tires Robert > Now im annoyed. I have been a fan of Michelin tires since around 1973. The Michelin's that were on my '81 240D, when I bought it in 1998 made me change my mind. Three of the four tires self destructed. I suspected that Michelin's QC had taken a vacation. I replaced the tires on the 240D with the equivalent Kelly-Springfields and had no problems. They were noisier, under certain conditions, but were very good tires. When the rear tires on my 300SD needed to be replaced, I put 4 Yokohama Avid Touring tires on it for little more than two Michelin X-Ones. After about 25,000 miles, I still feel they are the superior tire and cost one half of what the Michelins would have run. Michelin has evidently sunk to the level of Firestone. The Firestone's I had on my Pinto were the worst tires I have ever driven on. I replaced them after 6,000 miles, after being told that the Pinto was "hard on tires". The Michelins that replaced them were still on the car after over 60,000 miles and the car was sold off of the new car dealers used car lot with them still installed. The newer Michelin's are not the same tire, as far as I can tell. Dump the Michelins! Go with Yokohama's, Dunlop's, or Kumho's. You'll be happy you did... Jon '84 300SD 165,300 mi. My first instinct is to get rid of the Michelins. We will see what I can do at NTB tomorrow. This is the second blowout. The first time I convinced them to replace all four tires.... Hopefully this time I will be able to get them to put somethign different on. I doubt I will ever buy another Michelien tire ever again..... Jon Filina wrote: > Robert > >> Now im annoyed.
