Paul ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2003 11:00:06 -0500 From: "Black, Waylon" Subject: [db] I think I am going to quit buying Mercedes diesels - long Title is sure to get attention. ;) My decision is not from bad experience. I drive 20-25K miles a year. Before purchasing MB diesels, I always tried to have a little fleet of gas powered vehicles. I usually just drive em until they wear out. MB # 1 was/is a 1983 300 SD for $1500 - 292K miles. Silver and looked great, interior did show some wear. It was owned, briefly, by a punk teenager. I use to watch him thrash on the car. He finally tired of it and sold it to me 01/2002. The radio was gone and the rear shocks were trashed. I replaced the rear shocks, fluids, filters, etc. It turned 330K on Tuesday. ;) 38K miles in about 18 months. Still gets 25-26 mpg with diesel -at- $1.39/gallon. I have had to replace very little, since - 6 tires(a set + 2), alternator($80), rebuilt starter($80), rebuilt axle($90), A/C compressor(free - off a Chevette), and rubber fuel lines. Being so well satisfied with the first - another 1983 300 SD(pewter) came available. 'Only' 170K miles for $1500. This one had hit a cow which damaged the hood, grille, lights. Got another hood/grille off ebay(locally) for $1. It will soon be back on the road. MB # 3 was a whim. It is a 1974 240D/stick with 180K miles. Wife went and looked at it, she really liked driving it so I was the (only) winning bidder for $500. New paint but worn interior. For whatever reason it does not leak any fluids. The only time it has ever leaked is when I did not get the oil filter canister tight enough. I don't really like the car(spoiled by the SDs) but it has been as reliable as the others. It also came with a pretty nice 1981 240D/auto parst car with 150K for $150 - bad motor. I have found a salvage yard that will sell me the complete MB diesel drive train for $300 - $350. I will be picking up the 240 and the turbo diesel they have this weekend, maybe next. That will fix the other 240 and give me a spare motor/trans for the 300 SDs. The diesel advantages don't end there. Diesels only require a safety inspection - $12.50. If you own a gas car, it will be $42.50 a year. Friends and co-workers use to harass me about my noisy, slow diesels but a few have asked for me to help them find one. ('81 300td) I saw an add on tank that fit nicely up the backside of the backseat in the trunk in a 300d the other day (tried to buy it but never heard back from the owner) and am thinking this is the setup I would try and install. How do you set up the fuel lines so that you can switch tanks from the starting tank of #2 to the bio tank without getting air in the lines? i.e vapor lock (or is that even a problem on diesels?) Is it a similar setup to a dual tank jag (my only other experience with a dual tank setup) Although with the cold winter setting in, I don't think I'll start the project till spring as I've been told I can't run straight vegi oil during the winter because of gelling and I'm not quite ready to start mixing up the lye and methinol yet. soon, but not quite yet ;-) Anyway.... Also, does anyone know of any emmisions info on this type of fuel mixture? #2/vegi-oil I can't seem to find any web data on that perticular subject.
