Hey, I was buying parts today at a great local parts place in Atlanta and learned a neat trick in the process. My 126's power window switch on the drivers side was quite worn. It works but the decal is worn off and looked not so great. The rear window button on the 126's have the same decal (similar mine was turned the other direction but I think it was the door I selected). If you remove the switch from the rear door you can remove the rocker switch cover by using a small screwdriver on each side of the plastic tab holding the cover onto the switch. Its best to remove the switch completely from the door otherwise you will have metal bits falling out of your switch into your carpet. Once you remove the cover you can swap it from your rear door to your front console. As well you if you were really obsessed with looks you could take a Marks a lot and cover up the white area showing on the rear switches. On the rear doors an unmarked switch is somewhat acceptable especially if you don't have any other options such as adjustable rear seats or heated seats. While you have your switches open it might be a good time to clean them with some contact cleaner and a bit of abrasive on the contact posts inside. I used a dremel tool to clean mine. Unless you have any major damage inside the switch they are rather straight forward. If you have more than two worn switches this will probably not work for you. Just my drivers window switch was worn in this case. Beats spending $50 to replace a perfectly working switch just over cosmetics. Robert Chase P.S. My car has the older style switches (my car is a 1982 300sd) not sure if the later model switches can be repaired like this. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Sep 2003 23:34:33 -0400 From: "Wylie Bean" Subject: [db] newbie to list, not to the 300D ...longish Hi All, My name is Wylie Bean, I'm in Greensboro NC, native of DC, and I've just discovered this list after searching for quite a while for somewhere to discuss general and specific questions about my W123 300D Euro car. It's an '82 300D 4-speed manual non turbo car and it's been in my family since '83. No wood trim, MB tex, manual sunroof, rear windows, HVAC, etc. My parents bought it from a diplomat I think (i was 12 years old) and they gave it to me 2 1/2 years ago to drive so that it would be out of their way. Anyway, I've been driving the devil out of it since (it's got approx 435K miles) and just recently did the fuel filters because the car was running horribly and would barely do 55mph on straight flat highway. That cured the issue so I'm happy now. The only think that I've got to take care of soon are tires, which are worn horribly on the inner edges and are really, really out of balance, and the glow plug light is on constantly. I've heard that's due to a bad relay, but I wanted the collective opinions of those that have BTDT. Oh yeah, it leaks in the rain and water ponds in the passenger side footwells...front and rear. Is that the condensation drain hose deterioration issue I've heard about? Sorry for the long post, I figure it's my first, so I might as well make it worthwhile. PS, please respond to me directly (as well as the list if you desire) I'm in digest mode since I'm also a quattro fanatic (hence the email address) and monitor about 5 Audi-related email lists too. Sounds like a nice little car. Its nice to know the history of a vehicle. > That cured the issue so I'm > happy now. NTB put the wrong type of tires on my car and I experienced 2 80mph blowouts on the expressway due to the wrong speed rating of tire being placed on my heavy S class bodied 300SD. > Oh yeah, it leaks in the rain and water ponds in the passenger side > footwells...front and rear. Is that the condensation drain hose > deterioration issue I've heard about? Most likely its due to your battery tray rusting out. The battery tray is located on the passengers side. My brother's 300D does the same thing. Pull the carpet up and vacuum out the water with a shop vac and keep it under cover for a while. www.mercedesource.com sells a rather pricey "kit" to fix this. > > Sorry for the long post, I figure it's my first, so I might as well make it > worthwhile. > PS, please respond to me directly (as well as the list if you desire) I'm in > digest mode since I'm also a quattro fanatic (hence the email address) and > monitor about 5 Audi-related email lists too. Ah yes.... Audi A4's.... I should have bought one of those cars rather than the cruddy S70 that I owned. It was the Leatherette seats and lack of power adjustments that I did not like. I did not want to upgrade to the big engine just for power leather seats. Figured it was time... I've been leaving Diesel trails in just about every parking space. :) Mileage went from 31 down to 26... http://wagoneers.com/DieselBenz/TECH/Pressure-Valve-Seal-Replacement/ Took it up for a test drive... and wow... it runs better then before... it ran fine, but seemed to have this little dip in power just before it shifted... moved out ok, but didn't feel quite right. When I ran it up the highway it seemed smoother and faster then it ever did! I guess having one injector not fully putting out fuel out of 5 will affect performance just a wee bit... Guess the name "shadowfax" isn't too far out of line now... Need a stop watch to see if he's really doing 0 to 60 in 12 seconds... I'd like to find out if it'll really do 124 mph top end too... but the Autobahn isn't close by... :( john - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Perhaps in defense of Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, C (and Unix, for that matter) was created not for masses of incompetent programmers, but for Ken and Dennis and a few immediate colleagues.
