He's all set up for drag racing, slapper bars, big ol drag tires on the back, really narrow tires up front. Thinks he's the hottest thing in town, and is always doing big burnouts at the stopsign down the block. Yup, I'll challenge him to a race with the 190D. Around the block. :) I really don't think he'll enjoy the outcome of that. :) K - -- Kevin Pekarek Redwood City, CA (near San Francisco) and Los Osos, CA (near San Luis Obispo) 85 190D (601, 5spd) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Sep 2003 19:55:57 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: Re: [db] Big cloud of smoke.... We won't go into the fact that one of the "hey kev, check out the new chip" blasts up farm hill near my house resulted in EGTs of 1340 degrees, and that a cummins has aluminum pistons, and that aluminum melts at 1350... Yeah, I'm surprised he's still on his first engine, but he's proof you CAN get into trouble with a diesel. And he has. You can hear that he's got the timing retarded a bit too much, and the engine smells like he bought it from a junkyard out of a late seventies camaro. Yes, the block is fairly small - with two curvilinear legs to the block. Then again, I get the retired patrol car back from the shop tonight, so the "problem" might solve itself :) K - -- Kevin Pekarek Redwood City, CA (near San Francisco) and Los Osos, CA (near San Luis Obispo) 85 190D (601, 5spd) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2003 00:00:07 -0400 From: Robert Chase Subject: Re: [db] Big cloud of smoke.... Decent power, decent reliability, very fuel efficient for what it is - I get 22 mpg out of it. (which is nothing compared to the 40 out of the 190D that replaced it in the daily driver rotation) It LOOKS like it's still a police car. When I park it in front of my house, nobody blows the stopsign at the corner, and nobody does burnouts. Ford dropped the 460 in cars around 1975, and in trucks around 1998 when they started using the triton v10 (6.8L). It was a shame to see such a reliable workhorse get put to pasture, but life goes on. Heh heh, Your car reminded me of a mistake I made my first week of owning my 300SD. I cut off some guy in a Ford Taurus and he was an undercover cop. Of course he bought the lie that I was still getting used to such a big car when he saw the dealer tag still on my car :) Robert Chase Kevin Pekarek wrote: > On Tue, Sep 16, 2003 at 12:00:07AM -0400, Robert Chase wrote: > >>What do you have in that thing? Get the valves adjusted, have them check the timing chain stretch and run it as hard as you can. The big cloud of smoke is from too much in town, low rpm driving. Need to drive it like you stole it- hard acceleration from stops, up hills, etc. The harder you drive it the better it will run. Leave the transmission in 3 for in town driving. You will get less carbon build up in the engine. Check filters including the strainer in the fuel tank, any clogs could be affecting your acceleration. I dont' remember if you said this was a turbo - if so, clean the switchover valve and the banjo fitting at the back of the intake manifold. That's about all the easy, quick and inexpensive DIY stuff. We are planning another Midwest Listfest !!!! This year the day will start out with a tour of a *private* musuem that must be seen to be believed! This is NOT a public museum. This is an outbuilding (or two or three) at this guy's private home. These are a few of the pictures I took last year at another tour. http://www.buy-a-boat.com/music_machines.htm He is a collector of many things .... he has his own train and his own track to run it on ... his own carousel ...... he collects old steam engines and restores them to running condition. .... and his collection of music machine and organs is world famous. The location is in Barrington Hills, IL ........ and this should be link to a map so you have an idea. http://makeashorterlink.com/?O3F9225D5 The museum will be open to us (and a few other groups) starting at 9:30AM and will probably be over around noon. We then plan to meet at the home of Ginny Warren's father's house in Elgin, IL (not too far away) at approximately 1PM for an afternoon of Cajun barbeque and fun and friends and just general socializing. Ginny has said that anyone who would like to bring something should bring a "favorite spirit" from their local area to share .... For those that are still "hanging around" some sort of evening entertainment could be planned. On Sunday, anyone who is interested is invited for a sail on Lake Michigan. I hope that a couple of you might want to see what it is like on a beautiful fall day. I will include in a second messagea list of other options for the weekend from another friend on another list ..... There is an airshow in Rockford, the Bear and the Packers play in the new Soldier Field, major shopping available locally ..... and much more. If you are interested ...... *let me know*. We are trying to put this together and need a head count. Because of the nature of this year's fest, we are expecting more couples and several more kids that we had last year. So if your family is interested (or you would like them to be ...) they are welcome. If you have any questions .... or suggestions ...
