Guess I've always been lucky. Whenever my water pumps have gone I've had plenty of warning. The only exception was in a nearly new '81 Datsun (now Nissan for all you babies out there) diesel "King Kab" pickup truck not long after I bought it. The water pump shaft spun off the gear and drove the spinning fan into the radiator, rupturing it. What was interesting about this episode was that it happened late at night in an ice and snow blizzard - a really really cold one. At least by Texas standards. But seriously, there I was, stranded. In weather where a fellah could easily have frozen to death. Lucky me I had my state-of-the-art down filled mountaineering sleeping bag in the truck with me. Otherwise, I might not have been around today to give my gratuitous, erroneous, off-the-cuff, uninformed opinion on all sorts of topics, including, but not limited to, troubleshooting overheating conditions in '87 Suburbans. Here's to goose down and the internet! Yeah, baby! They mowed it after the county inspector came by early that morning. Instead of lodging a court case the overzealous county employee had my father arrested. Mind you my dad was 68 years old and got in the back of the patrol car with an oxygen tank. Of course dad would not sue which made no sense to me at all. I live in Clayton County Georgia. Try a Condo Owners Associations. I lived in a loft downtown and someone called the police and I got an alarm notice on my ALARM CLOCK! And of course there is the harrassment at 12 noon when someone is upset because they can just barely hear your stereo it in the hall way when standing near your door. I even got a notice from the condo association that the flickering lights coming out of my unit were "detracting from the look of the community at night" The flickering lights was my telivision (whell sorta it was a video projector). When I started opening the blinds while watching movies the complaints stopped but I found myself watching movies with my neighbors. Replace coolant with water - coolant does nasty things to engine bearings and the mix may be to high. Remove t-stat - this will also allow you to check if the pump is working - water will be flowing. Fan clutch good? Temp gauge/sensor good? Have rad flow checked - usually free. If all checks good - cracked block/head, bad head gasket. Coolant is full, radiator is hot, both top and bottom rad hoses are hot, no leaks, yet temp gauge was pegged to max. Water pump? Thermostat? Defective temp gauge? Given the amount of automotive knowledge on this list, I thought I'd get some opinions here before I start tearing into it.
