I've learned it cheaper and better to replace 'em not then wait a bit. I was hopeing to catch it now, and get some more life out the the actual joints as they are not "popping" and seem to be in good shape, just the lousy boots. Although I can just see it now. I don't think this is an option on the Mercedes. Driving with cracked boots really does not "hurt" anything other than the axle which is probably on its way out anyway which has to be replaced anyway during this repair. I would avoid driving through puddles and in really sandy areas to prolong the life you get out of these boots. When you start to hear the popping (which will be more pronounced on warm days) you will know to call the mechanic and schedule a time to get the repair done. My brother has a pretty heavy work schedule and has been driving his car on bad axles for a while now. They come and go and are most pronounced when turning. He has the parts just not the time to replace them. The only risk you have is the scheduling of your mechanic and the embarasment of driving a "clackety" Mercedes :) Robert Chase hue wong wrote: > Only one side is bad and there is a crack in it that > is starting to drip a littl oil. (another reason I love mercedes, even when they are broke, they still drive better then most cars) and oh did they whine going down the road towards the end.. My only concern is the small amount of oil that seems to be dripping out of 'em. They are significantly less expensive than new but I have no experience with them myself. Don't have a web site but their number is 1-800-355-PLUS. I would replace half-shafts before trying to replace boots. Proper boot replacement takes a special (expensive) tool to do correctly. Mickey Mousing boot replacement won't buy you much time.
