Realizing that you are probably short of time, this is probably a moot point, but you can rebuild those yourself fairly easily. Well, at least on a Grand National it's easy :) Check www.turbocity.com, they sell rebuild kits and have directions. Mostly list garrett stuff, but send them mail, they might be able to get whatever is on a benz diesel as well. Bad news is she hit the windshield, good news is we used the insurance money plus a couple grand to buy a pristine 1987 300D Turbo (one of the first chassis 124, but who cares it looks great!). We love this car! We paid $4,500, and figured we got a deal. It has 175,000 miles on it, but it looks as though the only owner had no kids, never took passengers anywhere, drove only on the highway, and kept it in the garage the rest of the time! I have a few questions and comments for the lot of you, so I hope people will put in their 2". 1. Nice pictures in the Olympics John! We live between Seattle and Portland, having an apartment in each city. What a great area to be in.... Maybe we will stop by your showroom someday soon and say hi. Got any nice used '96 Landcruisers? :~) 2. We have checked the fuel mileage and we get ~28-30 on the highway, and ~26 in town. This seems lower than other posted here. What are others getting? John said he got 32 on his drive... Everything seems ok; We had the compression checked and all cylinders were at > 450, and just a minor puff of smoke after a cold start; Acceleration seems good for a diesel except when cold; The tranny kicks hard into overdrive at ~3000rpm, higher when cold, I assume this is a normal function to compensate for low horsepower diesels. Mechanic said all this was ok. 3. The center 2 vents don^Rt work very often, make that almost never (twice maybe). I was thinking a vacuum issue, any indications on where the leak is at from these vents malfunctioning? Another indicator is the backseat headrest button doesn't work for a while after the car is started. This makes the climate control work very inefficiently. Grrr 4. Is excessive front tire wear normal for a Benz? We had tires bald on the outside with 50% tread on the inside when we got the car. We aligned it and put new ones on it, but I am pretty concerned about this. The tire dealer said it's a Benz trademark, you trade tires for the ride. Handy. 6. Truck lock malfunctioned and locked us out a few days after buying it. In the "unlock" position, the button pressed halfway but refused to unlatch the lid. I got it to open after monkeying with the key and the pneumatic lock operation for about 15 minutes. Mechanic said the tumblers were a bit worn, but I don't think it was the lock mechanism, the lock turns cleanly when the key is in. I think it had something to do with the "valet" key function, mixed with the mechanism operation itself. Anybody ever seen this issue before? Anyway, nice to meet all you Benz owners. I am a sailing yachty too, I noticed there was someone in the great lakes interested in sailing too. Hope to chat with you sometime. I'm kind of kicking myself for not buying that troubled '87 300d for $2,500... paid a LOT more for my '91. Mechanic said all this was ok. Try Lubro Molly Diesel purge they sell kits on www.mercedessource.com he is expensive but gives instructions for people who have never done the procedure. Also dont buy automotive grade diesel. Get your fuel where you know your getting Diesel #2. It has more "bang for the buck" > 4. Is excessive front tire wear normal for a Benz? Perhaps something "wearing out" in your front suspension. My 126 is very gentle on tires when they are not exploding at highway speeds (another story entirely) > 6. My 126 did the same thing at my drivers side door lock and trunk deck lid from time to time. The new key does not exhibit these problems. You will be amazed at the difference in thickness between the old and new key. Then again my 126 is a 1982 and has had a bit longer to wear out its key.
