BG has some first rate products for gas powered cars, it might be worthwhile to investigate whether they have any diesel oriented products. richard - -- Richard Welty rwelty-at-suespammers.org Averill Park Networking rwelty-at-averillpark.net Unix, Linux, IP Network Engineering, Security rwelty-at-krusty-motorsports.com 518-573-7592 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Oct 2003 19:08:45 -0400 (EDT) From: Richard Welty Subject: Re[2]: [db] 1990's E300D Reviews / Advice On Mon, 20 Oct 2003 17:30:42 -0500 Alec Cordova wrote: > For filters, although some WIX filters used to be relabeled good Mann ones, > the most predictable way is just to order them a few at a time from one of > our favorite sources like Rusty at buymbparts.com. for completeness, i'll provide an addendum to my fuel filter adventures of last week. i had ordered 2 fuel filters and 2 oil filters from the local NAPA. traditionally these have been Mann filters in boxes labeled Wix. when the two fuel filters came in, one was a Mann and one was unbranded, made in poland, and while servicable, not as nice a filter. the followon: when the two oil filters showed up 3 days later, one was a Mann and one was made in south africa,of distinctly different construction. it is again a serviceable filter, but from now on, i'm ordering from rusty. cheers, richard - -- Richard Welty rwelty-at-suespammers.org Averill Park Networking rwelty-at-averillpark.net Unix, Linux, IP Network Engineering, Security rwelty-at-krusty-motorsports.com 518-573-7592 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Oct 2003 17:07:00 -0700 From: Kevin Pekarek Subject: Re: [db] '80 300D Speed/Wtr Temp/ 7% grades On Mon, Oct 20, 2003 at 08:58:05AM -0700, R.A. I'm surprised you went that fast up cuesta grade. that hill is gnarly. I haven't had reason to take my 190D over cuesta grade yet, but in gassers I was happy to do 55-60 up that hill. Well, gassers aside from the 6.6L cherokee or the retired patrol car - I actually passed someone climbing that hill with the cherokee towing a trailer :) Anyways, 90 degrees Celsius isn't anything to worry about in a diesel benz. If your valves haven't been adjusted in a while, you might want to have them adjusted. Ahhh.... I used to have a 75 Opel 1900 that gave fits to BMW 320 owners on Highway Nine. Fast little car and handled well for a solid rear axel. My wife wrapped it around a tree and walked away. Actually, she spun it and when backwards into a tree. I finally realized what I really wanted was a larger Benz for me. I had been using the "84 300D turbo as my daily driver (That one will be the motor pool for the kids!) My 6' 240# frame sorta fits, but I am more comfortable in something larger. Likewise, my twin sons at 15 yrs. old and 6'1" could use more leg room when we all ride together. It gets old feeling their knees in my back! I finally found a 300 SDL that seemed a good value and put a deposit on it. It runs well, stays cool, and is extremely tight. Steering and suspension have zero play. Brakes are very good. Engine has 131K mi. and runs very smooth. There is no sign of any smoke. The paint has some scuffed spots, but overall is quite nice. The leather upholstery is excellent, the seats are in great condition. Now the bad news: The speedo does not work, although the odo and tach are fine. I guess I could learn to estimate speed from the revs, but I would like to have a working speedometer. The a/c "needs a charge" (or perhaps a lot more). The radio and clock work sometimes. Obviously a clock that only runs part of the time is of little use. I assume there are fuse/wiring/connector issues that need to be chased down. There is a big can next to the top of the exhaust side of the engine. I am thinking this is the infamous trap oxidizer. I paid $4600 and expect to have to put a bit into it. Please feel free to comment/advise! I am a 126 newbie. Now the other good news. I'm not quite as far gone as Waylon!
