My experience with the Bilsteins on my 300D and on a previous car, a SAAB 99 EMS was terrific. I used Boge struts as replacement on a Volvo 245 and they were also good. Unless there is a substantial savings with the Boge, I would go with Bilstein. On the front shocks, a 12 point box wrench is required, and one with a thin wall would be a help. IIRC, it is a 10 mm. It would be worth the time to grind down a standard wrench until it has adequate clearance. Other than that it is straightforward. Any issues that I should avoid? > As long as you're talking about the pre-1986 W123, there is very little difference. The wagon does use a hydropneumatic, self-leveling rear suspension, but that isn't usually a problem, especially if it's seen any kind of fluid changes in it's lifetime. These are exceptional wagons, with solid, non-squeaky chassis, and all the other plusses and minuses of the W123 series. I guess the only specific thing to watch out for is the same as for the sedans. 1985, and possibly 1984, California models had a trap oxidizer in the exhaust system under the hood, and that should have been removed long, long ago. A friend of mine is looking for cheap transportation and there is this 1987 VW cabrio for sale near me for $800. Talked to the owner and the car has 208k on it but has a new transmission and a used engine. Seemed like a good deal until the test drive. It looks like there was a rivet holding the extending arm of the regulator to the base of the window track that has disintegrated. To add to the confusion, the company I bought the part from can't track to the MB part number for my original. Anyone have any ideas? These were from when VW first came out with the "Rabbits" (late 70s) through the end of 1984. A complete rebuild for these cars if you do it yourself (I've done several of 'em) has cost about $700. I imagine the A2 cars (your scenario) would cost slightly more. But I don't know. I have never owned an A2 car.
