I've decided to get out of the MB-Diesel family for now. The death of my 240D requires a replacement vehicle. I've been putting it off too long now. My wife wants *her* car back! ;) I'm pretty much set on a '96/'97 Passat TDI. Big enough to carry my 6' & 6'2" daughters! ;) Jettas are just too small in the back seat. I found a nice '97 TDI Wagon on the east coast but at $7995 I think it's a little over priced. According to Kelly Blue Book (www.kbb.com) it should be more like $5000-$5500. But they are hard to come by and thus carry somewhat of a premium. I found a sedan in Minneapolis for $3500 with less miles. So I'm going to call about that one. The thing that often causes the most improvement is replacing the steering shock. They are inexpensive (<$20) and only take a few minutes to R&R. I like CDs, enjoy yours. When I first start the car and let it warm up, I get good heat. However, if I turn the heat down, or if the car reaches the set temperature and turns the heat down automatically, it never comes back. The system will continue to blow air, but it is lukewarm at best. This happens at all fan speeds and settings. Sometimes, after 30 minutes or so, it will blow hot air again. If I shut the car off like I did today while fueling up, when I get back in I get hot air again. I'm guessing that my monovalve might be sticking. Does this seem reasonable? Any other ideas? This is an '82 300CD with the automatic climate control. Second, is the steering box adjustable on these cars? I see a lock bolt and allen head on top, and it looks like the adjustment bolt on other vehicles I've seen. However, I know that certain vehicles can be very tricky and adjusting this bolt can do more harm than good. Anyone have any input on this? I have a significant amount of play in the box and I'd like to reduce it some if possible. Thanks in advance. When I was looking at diesels, I briefly entertained the TDI Passat, but quickly found that the cheap ones were sold before the ink was dry on the ad, and the expensive ones shortly thereafter. If you find one, it should be a great car. Hard to argue with 45 MPG in a relatively large car. J.B. At 12:07 PM 10/23/2003 -0400, you wrote: >Well Folks... The suspension stop is built in to the standard Bilstein or F&S/Boge shocks. KYBs are not designed to accommodate the forces involved. Times when one might hit the suspension stop are not the best for a shock to self-destruct.
