Hebert" Subject: [db] More tachometer questions (and other fun stuff) Following instructions from earlier posts, I tested my tach sender with a multimeter and was not getting the necessary fluctuation in resistance so I decided to replace the TDC sensor. I got a shiny new one from Rusty and went to put it in. Let's just say I think I figured out why it wasn't working; the wires for the old TDC sensor end in a severed stump in the vicinity of the crank pulley. Now, having never owned a diesel Benz with a tach, I have no idea how this thing is supposed to mount. Can someone point me to a picture of the TDC sensor mounted at the crank pulley end? I also decided to rebuild my monovalve this evening. It turns out that the connector on top was severely corroded and pretty much fell apart when I tried to get it off. I crimped on some temporary connectors until I can fix it correctly and wanted to make sure I had them in the correct location. The two wires going to the top are black with red tracer and tan(ish). Which one goes on the pin towards the front of the car and which one goes on the one towards the rear? I think the black/red one goes towards the rear and the tan one goes towards the front, but I want to make sure. So much for a couple quick fixes this evening... Thanks in advance. Since you didn't sign your message with a recognizable name, I'll just call you "Will".... Will, I dispose of my used oil at the gas station where I fuel. Steve, the owner, drives a Ford Diesel pickup and uses his own fuel. He runs a full service station. I pay upwards of 10 cents a gallon more for his fuel, but have never had any problems with it. If I need to dump the used oil or have a flat fixed, he's there for me. Beyond that, most places which sell you oil should take the same quantities of used oil back. Walmart and Autozone should be good places to take your old stuff. I've never dealt with antifreeze, so I have no answer there. I highly doubt you'll need new pistons or head. usually what i hear of getting replaced when the timing chain goes is the chain, and all of the infernal aluminum surrounding it. memory serving me, this was on a 300SD with a 617, so you probably don't have the infernal 601 (and probably 602/603) aluminum timing chain cover to deal with. I could swear the 617 was not an interference designed engine. You might be able to avoid pulling the head by manually rotating the camshaft with the valve cover off and seeing if the valves are all straight. I'm not sure if these motors are interference or not... I know the vw Diesels are... If you do pull the heads examine the pistons carefully for cracks and the valves to see if they're bent. I was worried that I was getting under 30 mpg (around 27-28 even on the trip from WA to CA) that my timing was off. Especially after hearing 33-34 from John just before I got it. Having very little time to actually work on these things lately, I've been pushing the whole timing adjustment off. When I filled up for a recent trip to the Bay Area from the Sacramento area, I checked the tire pressure and found all four to be at only 20 psi or so. I pumped the front up to 34 and the rear to 36 psi, and put a little cetane boost in the fill-up. I just filled up yesterday, after going to the Bay area and back, and a few days of commute...the miles just kept piling on with the same tank. The verdict is in: 430 miles on 12.2 gallons = 35.2 mpg. YIPPEEE. I guess the tires were just low all this time. I checked when I filled up, and they were down to 32 psi, so I put them all back up to 36 psi again. I'm not sure if they all have a small leak or if it's just the temperature change this week... Oh, one other difference is no AC...don't need it now, but it's seized even if I did need it... ;) Scott - -- Scott Haaland 96 6.5L TurboDiesel Chevy Suburban K1500 85 Mercedes 2.2L 190D 80 300 SD - The Silver Hornet 87 Acura Legend 83 VW Vanagon 69 Chevy 3/4 Ton Pickup ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 2003 14:05:18 -0800 From: "derick" Subject: RE: [db] 190D Efficiency Subject: [db] Who was looking for a BIG fuel tank for a 123? Just talked to Aurora Auto Wrecking they'll replace it for us!!! It's just a little out of warranty, as I purchased it on June 23rd, invoice 179125, just talked to Mark... (of course it broke on you well within the warranty period) Anyway, problem is I have to deal with them. Since you really can't drive the car without it here's what we'll do. I'll buy another one and have it UPS'd down to you. You swap it out and ship that one back to Aurora Auto Wrecking in the same box. When it arrives they credit by credit card. So, I guess you can call or email with your address ASAP and I'll get it shipped out at the same time. :) I tried to work it where you call and give your credit card but he won't do that... no biggie, I trust ya. Just get it swapped out ASAP since I'm not working and may need that money to keep afloat. :) HURRY UP, they close at 5pm, it's only 2:30pm... :) (I think the only cost we'll have is the shipping, don't worry about the shipping down to you, I'll cover that... ;) ttyl, john scott_haaland-at-agilent.com wrote: >Hi All, > >I'm a bit relieved after my last tank of Diesel.
