Based on the sharp cracks I heard, I thought valves hit pistons. Now that I think about it, might have been the chain whip-cracking about. I have no direct experience, but I would think a reasonably well maintained OM603 lower end would be good for maybe 400,000 miles or more? You don't really hear many tales of MB diesel bottom ends wearing out, except for the 3.5 liter. Usually timing chain or its tensioner, or the car gets wrecked. This assumes regular maintenance, oil changes, etc. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 2003 20:10:39 -0600 From: "Alec Cordova" Subject: RE: [db] timing chain To the best of my knowledge, virtually all MB car motors, at least since the 70's, are interference motors. That comes up occasionally on other mailing lists when gassers start asking when to replace the timing chain, for which there is no consistent answer. Mistake or not it was really MB that was the stupid one in that transaction. They have "cheapened" their reputation in the process. > Agreed. Yes. I think a lot of them existed before but now after the merger people scream louder about them now. I personally wont touch anything after 1995 even if it has an MB emblem on it or not. ALL cars are turning to shit these days. > Your emails are the ones I go searching for when the wife starts talking about a new car. I have never understood the Crossfire. Why would anybody want it? It has the technology of an SLK without the convertible top. And costs almost the same amount. I think the Crossfire will probably become collectable in an Edsel sorta way. Im glad to see the Sprinter here but they should have put an MB logo on it since its really an MB. The G class has taken off in a strange sort of way I think the same could happen for the Van if they actually badged it correctly. To replace the Dodge vans was a mistake as most of them are "conversion vans" down here in the south. A Sprinter conversion van would be weird looking. > I hought it was really a Freightliner with a MB engine Reminds me of the Cray SGI merger. Two different companies with radically different product lines trying to merge. The Cray SGI merger was a failure and cost SGI a lot of money. Although SGI did keep some of the Cray technology and workers as well. > I wish MB would dump Chrysler - they can keep Jeep and Mitsu(don't hate me John - LOL) Hmmm. Maybee you could put an MB emblem on the Lebaron inside the Chrysler Pentagon. Remember the TC by Maserati? They had the Maserati emblem inside the Chrysler Pentagon. UUUUGhhhh Robert Chase >The TC(groan), soon to be joined by the Crossfire. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Nov 2003 20:02:43 -0500 From: "Michael Aimino" Subject: [db] engine weight Any know roughly how much a 617.951 engine weighs?
