Decisions, decisions... I'm trying to decide if I should take on an '82 300SD with a bad engine, moldy interior, a few electrical door switch "issues" as a project... (the engine appears to have either a broken ring or a hole in the piston... runs on 4/5 cylinders) or tackle a '79 J10 Golden Eagle with an oil leak (supposedly a 401), loose steering column, bad vent window and "some assembly required". Comes with it's own hornets nest too... :) The '82 300d pictures are at: http://www.wagoneers.com/DieselBenz/CARS/82-300sd/ The '79 Golden Eagle is at: http://www.wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/79-GoldenEagle-J10/ Initial investment on both is about the same... I think the Benz will get spendy in a hurry though... probably an additional $1,500. But the end price tag will be around $3 - - $4k and I might keep it and sell my '91 300d if I don't find a UNIX Sys Admin job soon... The J10 will mainly take labor... but less then the engine R&R on the Benz... hmmm.... only problem is the net value of the J10 will only be around $2k or so... maybe more, hard to say... and it'll get around 10mpg vs. 30mpg... (but it'll haul gravel... ;) Any thoughts? Oh yeah, one other thing... if I go with the J10 I'll probably trade my current digital camera (Olympus C-730) for it and then buy the latest C-750... 3.2M pixels to 4.0 and from 1/2 seconds to 16 seconds exposure! If I can work the trade I'm going that route... Guess I'll decide tomorrow... If I don't go with the Benz I'll pass along the contact info... I know a few folks that might be interested... NO RUST... Jason, my '91 300d is smoke-silver http://www.wagoneers.com/DieselBenz/91-300d-2.5L/ If I am able to keep the 300d I'll probably go for the euro upgrade later... need to replace the rotors and fix the aux water pump for the heater... otherwise it's nearly perfect... only 3000 made? U sure? Just looked at Nitske's book... according to pg 258 there was the following produced (300d 2.5L) 1989 - 6 units 1990 - 308 units 1991 - 209 units Yikes... no wonder I had so much trouble finding one! :) And I thought my '83 J10 Stepside was rare... :) (4,705 total J10s made, no idea of how many stepsides there were...) Anyone else able to verify the production numbers of the 124 series 300D??? I'm going to pass on the '82 300sd... going to take on the '79 J10 Golden Eagle project rather... trucks sell easier then cars. :) That and I can trade and upgrade my digital camera at the same time. :) john >Message: 2 >Date: Sat, 8 Nov 2003 22:21:26 -0600 >From: "Jason Stern" >Subject: RE: [MB] 91 300d / 82 300sd >Hey John, >Would you believe that I sold the old lights on ebay?! I can't remember what he was asking for it back in 2000 or why I didn't go for it... I clearly remember not liking it though... I try to keep track of the costs and get real creative sometimes... :) Out of the 89 vehicles I've owned I've only gone "backwards" on about three or four of them... http://www.wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html And most of the time I end up selling them for more then I bought 'em for... of course most of the vehicles I've bought were brought home on a flatbed, towstrap, towdolly or with the help of gravity... :) They usually were making noises that terrified the general public or had other "issues". :) I traded about 6 cord of firewood for a Pinto that had been run out of oil and coolant... got it running and traded it for a Jeep Wagoneer... one adventure after another. :) I'm confident I could break even with the '82 300SD project... but I just don't have the desire to make it happen... I'm more interested in the '79 J10 Golden Eagle project... The repairs needed I have the parts for and some TLC will make it a nice truck again...
