I used the amsoil marine grade 15w40 100% synthetic in my yanmar Diesel tractor... I like the marine grade because it helps prevent engine rust in damp climates... (PNW for instance). I use it in my lawnmower and other equipment too. Always important to break an engine in before using any synthetics... Almost all of the modern synthetics have seal swelling agents built in so leaking shouldn't be any more of a problem then with dino oil. john >Message: 12 >Date: Sun, 09 Nov 2003 10:27:45 -0600 >From: Jan Guthrie >Subject: Re: [MB] Synthetic oil in Yanmars .... > >Graham, > >After becoming a "true believer" about synthetic oils (thanks to this list), I >wanted to be able to recommend to some of my customers that they use synthetic >oils. I've been looking at Auto Trader listings for 300 SDs and SDLs to ponder upgrading from my 300D Turbo to an SD or SDL. I have the funny feeling that the L stands for Luxury, or maybe Leather. There is a 1986 300SDL for sale close to me that sounds like it's in good shape for $4300. I haven't called yet to check on the mileage. Also, what year did the rims change to the "flatter" style that are much easier to clean than the rims on my '83 300D? SD stands for S super (S class) D Diesel. SDL stands for S super (S class) D Diesel L Long body. The rear door of the SDL is longer than the SD. Both cars came with similar options with the exception of electrically adjustable rear seats on the SDL. Wheels Changed in 1986 and so did the front headlights (I think). I think the pre 1986 headlights are very ugly. NHTSA and their wisdom did not approve halogen headlight designs for several years into the 126 chassis run. I think Mercedes made those lights especially ugly out of the irritation of having to redesign for our market. Inside you will notice a "tray" under the bottom of the dash that the pre 86 models dont have. Airbags came as options from 1981 on as the 126 was the first production vehicle sold in the world with an airbag as an option (note: those GM cars in the 70's were not sold and were part of a special program. MB did the same research and decided not to honk their horn until they were selling them as real cars.) You wont see many airbags though on early model vehicles as it was probably expensive. I drive a 1982 300SD. Personally I would not want one of the newer cars. While you do get some nice options with the newer cars you get some not so nice mechanical trade offs. My car has the ultra reliable 617 series engine. About 1985 or so they moved to a 6cylender engine and then to a 3.5l engine that was less than reliable. Here is some photos of my car. http://beostar.paunix.org/mbz Robert Chase Marc Zylka wrote: > What is the difference between a 300SD and 300SDL? I've been DRILLED on the evils of cavitation. A good friend of mine has a late 80's F250 w/7.3 and he tests his antifreeze religiously and keeps the additive balance correct. This '94 HAD the engine fail caused by cavitation! The engine failed at 60K miles. So the new engine only has ~45K on it. I'm suspicious about the injector pump being bad with only that many miles. Maybe something is out of adjustment. I've heard that you can "tune" those pumps for better performance/milage. Which brings me to another question. I've heard people getting upwards of 20+ mpg with the Navistar engines. What have you guys gotten? Jim/ P.S. After the engine failure caused by the cavitation the current owner has been very carefull to keep the additive in the colant ;) I had a new radiator last year also... More additive at that time. So I think the engine is ok from that standpoint. > Dude! > > Before you make a move do a web search on "FORD 7.3 CAVITATION".
