The question is does it benefit the end user of the vehicle? If someone reccomended 100k replacment of my timing chain their credibility would be in question. Considering an 617 series engine can easily last up to 350k miles (and even more in lots of cases) are you saying that the vehicle will need 3.5 new timing chains in its lifespan? Robert Chase J.B. Great stuff. I also got some oil from an indian restaurant and it smells good also. I do not want to use waste engine oil because of all the acids/nasty stuff in there, though I know people who do that, sometimes cut with kerosene. Now, how about waste hydraulic oil? It is nice and thin, thinner than engine oil, probably thin enough to run as-is. I think if I filter it and throw it in the tank I should be fine, but want to check with you guys first if there are any chemicals in there that I do not want to burn in an OM617. I have run small amounts of ATF fluid before as that cleans the injector nozzles. Surely ATF is not that different from hydraulic. Key observation. Big backhoes etc have 25 gallons of hydraulic oil per change and I know a guy at a service place who throws this stuff away. Great stuff. But the car I am seriously considering is a 1983 300D turbo sedan, which I guess has a OM617.952 engine. In what way did you convert your engine to run waste oil? What part of the country are you in? I am in Shoreline, WA. How difficult is it to ask a restaurant for waste oil? How do you process it? Contact me on or off the list! Thanks! I ran a check on my six cars and didn't learn anything new about any of them. I am in Rhode Island. None of the RI data was available on any of them - perhaps some states don't offer the information. Two of the cars are older and don't have 17 digit vins - Carfax input screen wouldn't even accept those. Anyway, glad I didn't spend the bucks on a membership - and I probably won't ever! Fuses are intact, have disconnected battery, started and driven the car several times in the last couple of days. Problem was induced when jumpstarting a car with a totally dead battery. When testing to see if the battery of the other car was taking a charge I had the guy turn on his lights, then I disconnected the ground lead and saw some sparks... Of course the other car's lights went right out... After that the light on the lower part of the dash came on and has stayed on, and of course the diff doesn't lock up any more either. :( $439.92 module... Is that the ONLY possibility? BTW, fuses for overvoltage make little sense. A fuse like the kind used (10A blade fuses) are only good for short protection and overcurrent. The UL standard for fuses (at least in the late '80s) was that a fuse must open within 60 MINUTES at 135% of it's rating. The IEC says 150% of rating for no LESS then 60 minutes. The CSA says 200% for 2 minutes up to 30 amps... In other words, a fuse IS NOT going to protect any electronics from an overvoltage condition, let alone a harmful transient or power spike. They could have used a tranzorb or even a set of protection diodes... So, if this module is the ONLY part that could be the problem I may take it apart and troubleshoot it at the component level. It's probably a transistor that blew... Another question... How do I get that module out of it's socket??? :) thanx all, john - -- - ------------------------------------------------------------------ john at http://wagoneers.com from Snohomish,WA- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... reminding you not to leave life w/o Jesus! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #1286 **********************************
