I've heard that before and practice >it, but I've wondered what you would hurt. Just curious.... In my experience it does not hurt anything, however; if you do go backwards and try to align timing it isn't going to work. Lets say you want to go to TDC well your sitting there cranking and cranking with a trigger switch and you overshoot by 5 degrees. No problem , use a socket on the crank bolt, and go back 5 degrees right? WRONG! For reasons mentioned in an earlier reply the tensioner will be fudged and your slack where you should be taut and taut where you should be slack. If you set timing now you're going to be off. So be better go round 2 more revolutions and get back to your timing marks with the proper tension. The quickest way of getting to the marks in a hurry is to loosen the injectors and use the crank bolt. You can get it to a gnats' behind with this setup. Super easy and most of the time quicker than bumping the engine with a trigger switch. ( do not ask how I know this ) Anyhow good luck, Derick - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Just got back from Leavenworth, WA... had Schnitzel for lunch... large schweineschnitzel, mit grun salat und pomme frites, und eine coca cola... :) ended up taking the '87 Jeep Cherokee with 246,742 miles over the '91 300d... my wife can not sit in the benz seats for more then an hour or so... I actually preferred driving the XJ over the 124. Better visibility, nicer view... (3" of lift and 31" tires. ;) Seemed to have gotten reasonable mileage too... will figure it out tomorrow and post some pictures, found a good pizza place across from the Schnitzel place that has parking... nice day... later, john - -- - ------------------------------------------------------------------ john at http://wagoneers.com from Snohomish,WA- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... reminding you not to leave life w/o Jesus! - ------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Nov 2003 12:59:52 -0500 From: "McCormick, George" Subject: [db] 123 wood trim and drains The wood trim in the middle of my 123 ('84 300D) dash has warped so that the ends raise up off of the dashboard. After repeated efforts to straighten it out (mainly a toolbox on each warped end of the wood while it spans a book to raise the middle) I'm about to decide it is a lost cause. While I can straighten it, it promptly rewarps within a day or two. Any advice would be much appreciated. Also, and maybe the same answer, does anyone have a good source for the wood trim box that houses the window switches and the auto transmission lever? Mine has shed pieces of the wood and needs help. I seem to remember that blockage of the under hood water drain on the passenger side (under the hood hinge) is the cause of water in the rear floorboard. Do i have this right? As you can guess all of a sudden I have a lot of water soaking the carpet and that drain was indeed blocked. Now it's open and I'm hoping to quit worrying about it.
