The problem was an uninformed salesman yesterday who told me that they didn't sell the complete assembly. It turns out they do. I got the part for $33.70 plus shipping. The unfortunate thing is that I will have to wait a week for it to get here from Sunny California. Unfortunately it isn't sunny here in Illinois and I will be riding a motorcycle. (long) I've heard a friend say if it weren't for bad luck he wouldn't have any luck at all... Anyway, I'm beginning to wonder if I shouldn't change my name to "tim the tool man taylor" or Job. It's bad enough being out of work, but when trying to help a friend jump start his car I blew something on my '91 300d so the ASD light stays on... yeah, there were a few sparks, big deal, after all my Diesel has a big battery... and his battery was dead, but I didn't figure it would hurt anything... Ok, so now I just need to figure out the codes after finding a logic probe or a computer to read it... (next week hopefully talked to a friend with a shop, he's got the Benz module for his... :) But wait, it gets better... trying to get the kitchen ready for Thanksgiving yesterday my wife asks me to change the light bulb in the oven... ok, sounds simple enough... yeah, right, the bulb breaks off at the base and in the process of trying to remove it it shorts out creating a large flash and pop. Ok, no biggie, right? Probably popped a fuse... breaker was ok... uh oh.... hmmm... take the back off, check the fuse, ok... so I go in further... ahha... look at that black spot on that circuit board, that could be a problem... take it all apart, see a blown solder trace... whip out the soldering iron, repair it... reassemble, no happiness... look at the front and notice the custom digital display has black spots on one side as well... NOT good... So, I get out the yellow pages and start looking for the oven control module... find one... but it won't be here until Monday... argghhhhh.... no turkey for this turkey... (place turkey back in freezer) So, I try to fix the heater in my Benz... I go to Seattle, get the part, take my car apart and find out there isn't an auxillary water pump that looks anything like the one the dealer's parts computer claims to be... so return the part today and head to a wrecking yard... all the wrecked ones have the aux pump... my '91 300d 2.5L TD is different... maybe $300 or more different... oh well, who needs heat when you're not moving? right? That's what the seat heaters and blankets are for... ;) So we go to Costco... they run out of pumpkin pies, but wait, we can wait in line, they're baking more non-stop... my wife waits in line, it snakes around the store... she gets to the front of the line... they run out again just when it's our turn... only 30 more minutes for the next batch. Some how my wife convinces me that waiting is a good thing, (later she mentions that she had been amusing the folks in line with the reason why she wasn't baking her own pie... (which btw, are a lot better then any bakery or Costco's)... and someone in line commented that it sounded like she was married to "Tim the Toolman Taylor"... : ) So I consent to stand guard for our turn at the pie and she wanders around Costco... what's this? ? Good fortune, the baker finds two pies that they forgot about from the last batch so I won't have to wait for 25 more minutes. I grab the pie (one per member, the thought of gathering many and reselling them outside crosses our minds) and head for the gates... find the wife along the way and we break for the Benz... as I approach the 300d a young man approaches and says he left his lights on and needs a jump... thoughts of the blown ASD system cross my mind and I figure... NO PROBLEM, WHAT ELSE COULD GO WRONG... :) I hand the cables to this nicely dressed young man, begin the connection process on my end, wait for him to make his connections, then attach the ground on my end to the strut... I noticed a BIG SPARK, wow his battery must be REALLY low... then I look over at his terminals and notice that where there is red on his battery is my black jumper cable, and where there is black on his battery is my red jumper cable... THEN before I can process this complex thought I notice a puff of smoke coming from the front of my Benz and my wife frantically waving and reaching over and turning the car off as I finally engage brain and yank the connection... at first I thought that my benz had been killed, but thankfully it was just my wife shutting the car off, not that makes much difference in a case like this... So I check a few things... seems ok, phew.... dodged that bullet... so this time we get the connections right... he still doesn't start... another mechanic walks up and finds that his battery cables are loose, tightens them and we finally get him started... I sink into my seat thankful that nothing else was broken on my car... no extra lights display... phew... then I notice the windows are fogging up... I push the defrost button, NOTHING, the upper/lower vents, NOTHING... I try high, I try low, I try auto... no happiness... oh crap I think, Strike Two, thank YOU Mr. Rube Goldberg... first the ASD, now the Confusion, er, Climate Control... So we drive home with the sunroof open in 40 degree weather and I'm wondering how I'm going to pay for a $200 oven control unit, a $400 plus ASD controller and whatever the climate control is going to cost... I get home and check the fuses... what's this? GOOD NEWS! A blown fuse... I've never been happier to see a blown fuse... I swap it out, turn on the key and voila, we have air flow... PTL and pass the replacement fuses... Next I head for the front of the car with the trouble light... WHERE DID THAT SMOKE come from? Here it is... a ground wire... phew... easy enough to deal with... So, for thanksgiving dinner we're going to forage for food out "there"... searching for an open Domino's or Taco Bell or McDonald's or maybe the 116th Street Diner, or even the "upscale" 125th Street Diner, who knows... or maybe stay at home and heat up hot dogs... we'll see... just another adventure in the continuing saga of the Diesel loving UNIX sys admin... :) So folks, should I go by Tim or Job? :) or maybe Tom, as in turkey... ;) My wife suggested that I not provide jump starts when driving the Mercedes... what, and not share that big battery with those in need? Besides, life would be kind of boring without all those sparks and all... Hope you all have a great thanksgiving... and we ALL have a lot to be thankful for... :) john - -- - ------------------------------------------------------------------ john at http://wagoneers.com from Snohomish,WA- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... reminding you not to leave life w/o Jesus!
