When I sold my 2002 Accord it really was a buyers market. Once I realized that the dealer down the street was selling the same car with a warranty for lower than my asking price I dropped the price and the car sold. Good riddance to that tin can. Right now is an even worse time for the market because a lot of dealers still have a TON of 03's and are getting in new 04's. With the new year around the bend for these dealers they are getting quite aggressive with putting buyers into cars cheap. They are faced with a loose loose situation on the 03's. They can auction them off at a loss, put them on the used lot or sit them right next to 04's with similar pricing and incentive packages. As well on John's car. While John's car is a nice clean example of a 300D there are lots of similar 86 and up cars floating around really cheap. There are a lot of older 300D's floating around for $3500-4000. In addition to the older cars there are a lot of newer 300D's with the updated headlamps and interior floating around for around what your asking price is. He's supposed to get it after my '83 J10 stepside is finished... it was supposed to be finished Labor Day 2001... which is one of the reasons I keep changing vehicles, I'm just shuffling wheels waiting for my favorite one to come back home. ;) here's a picture of Rambo in front of my '83 300SD: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/johns-67-Panel/March17-PANEL/P3171189.JPG Oh, as far as the Diesel in the XJ, that 300D (mid 80's) will be finding it's way here this week, I think... we'll see, no hurry... So even if I should sell or trade in the '91 I'll have another Diesel Benz standing by... :) You know, it's more fun to think up options then it is to actually do them... I've done both and it costs a lot less to talk about it something then to actually do it, and it provides a lot of entertainment. ;) I've done about three major swap/conversions so far... they're fun, but they never really satisfy, always cost more then planned and take forever. And there's always the next one... I'm still trying to build a Diesel powered Jeep... my dream is getting closer though... one each high mileage XJ and one damaged 300D... looks like I'll have to buy another shop hoist... :) john > No John, > > I think it's time to sell the 300D...our popcorn is ready, we're waiting! > > John > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "john meister" > To: "'Diesel Benz'" ; "ml" > > Sent: Monday, December 29, 2003 12:25 PM > Subject: [MB] did some math ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Dec 2003 05:58:13 +0000 From: dieseljohn-at-comcast.net Subject: Re: [db] did some math actually my '87 xj gets 21mpg on the highway, 16 mpg in town... of course you've seen our terrain... ain't level ground in "town". :) john > On Mon, Dec 29, 2003 at 02:53:01PM -0600, Alec Cordova wrote: > > XJ: > > 200 miles > > at 16mpg > > uses 12.5 gallons > > at $1.55 per gallon > > costs $19.38 in fuel to drive 200 miles in this XJ > > > > > > DB: > > 200 miles > > at 26mpg > > uses 7.7 gallons (just under, but we'll round up to 7.7) > > at $1.65 per gallon > > costs $12.71 to drive the diesel Benz 200 miles. > > > > So fuel costs are almost 35% cheaper using the Benz. > > Yeah, and I forgot John's XJ wasn't getting 20mpg. (don't need a scraper for rain... remember this is Seattle... ;) In other news, Gas prices jumped up to $1.60, Diesel still at $1.66... I think I'll leave the math for someone else... ;) john - -- ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** john-at-wagoneers.com ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. ** trust Jesus ** - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Dec 2003 00:25:23 -0800 From: john meister Subject: [db] Re: [MB] 25 degrees F actually you're right... with the correct variables in place and assuming a 600 mile monthly usage, I'd actually save just over $20/month driving the 300d at 26mpg at $1.67/gallon vs. the '87 XJ (or any other Jeep in good tune) getting 16mpg and using gas at $1.56/gallon... of course on the way home I noticed that gas jumped up to $1.60/gal while Diesel remained at $1.67. :) I think I just need to fix my ASD and aux water pump so that my car is perfect and I quit sweating the Rube Goldberg stuff... :) Now that I'm working again it looks like I'll be able to afford to have someone with the right tools figure out what went away during that jump start... :) Or I just need to take the time to print out the microsized pdf wiring diagrams and start tracing them... Did I mention how much I dislike German wiring? :) The other objective is to replace my wife's WJ that we sold. Being out of work isn't a good time to have a car payment. Getting rid of the very nice '91 300d and selling/trading the '79 Golden Eagle J10 will just about get us a decent 4.0L powered stripped down WJ. I've picked up an '83 300D that needs some work from a friend, so I'll have a Diesel Benz until my J10 is finished (the '83 stepside that is getting a full frame off resto). Then I'll decommission the '87 XJ and start the transplant of the 3.0L Mercedes Diesel into it. I think it'll be a great setup. I've wanted to create a Diesel Jeep since the late '80's... I ended up in Garage Scenes in Four Wheeler magazine two years running with projects... I did have an '85 Jeep Cherokee with the french Renault 2.1L all-aluminum Turbo Diesel... loved the Jeep and Diesel but the 5speed was a pain... of course it couldn't tow it's own shadow, but it was great. I've wanted to build another XJ with a Diesel since then, I only with the '87 had more options, but hey, that's what JC Whitney is for, right? ;) I thought about putting a Diesel into my J10 but there really aren't any good options for that chassis that I could find so I went with a '96 4.0L HO motor out of an XJ, it's replacing the stock 4.2L that had a bad cylinder... Hope you're feeling better... aren't you down in CA? You aren't up to late if so... working swings seems to match my natural bioclock pretty well... getting up at oh-dark thirty is kind of against my religion... ;) Anyway, load up on Vitamin C, drink lots of water, maybe have some good Hot and Sour Soup and get some rest... :) Don't think too hard about what I'm up to or you'll only hurt yourself... :) And just be thankful you don't live near me and experience all this first hand... You'd need to have your sides stitched up from time to time... ;) And also be thankful that my wife only permits me to have one project at a time on site... (hence my creative storage for Jeeps and Mercedes throughout Western Washington... ;) later, john William L.
