This ones been around since summer. I'd grab it in a sec, but have no room to store it! The engine is blown, the body and interior fair. Pictures may be seen at http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/visceralvic/lst?.dir=/Mercedes&.view=t Must be towed. The oil pan will have to come off anyway as it is cracked and needs welding. Have my eye on a 2.5 that I may try to get the whole engine. ;) Date: Thu, 8 Jan 2004 18:18:47 -0500 From: derick-at-amburgey.us Subject: RE: [db] Tensioner Damper - Rattling Waylon, Call Randy Steele at EPS parts . He has NEVER sent me a wrong part since 1998! I do not mind paying a little extra someone as anal as I am. He has gone the extra mile for me on a couple of occasions. I paid $130+ with shipping. www.epsparts.com Kevin is right, there is a division of blocks, your engine number will determine the head that goes on it. Thus the timing chain cover that mates with the front bottom. What the difference is , I do not know, never spent much time looking into it. You will need your VIN and Engine number. If you need to know where the engine number is let me know and I will take a picture tomorrow. Hard to explain what a picture will tell you in an instant. Make sure you keep that chunk that fell out! You are going to need to unscrew that bushing pin from what^Rs left of the cover (hex socket size?) You are also going to need to remove the dip stick tube. While it is possible to replace the cover without removing the head it is a little tricky because the head gasket extends out beyond the block. Loosen up your oil pan so you have some play in the front (I know there are about 30 fasteners on it and it is a total drag ). You are going to have focus your attention on the head gasket so it is best not to be distracted by the oil pan gasket. Do not forget to remove the 2 hex bolts underneath the valve cover that attach the timing chain cover to the head. Since the cover presses on to two metal pins you will need to go very slow and ensure you do not bend the head gasket. Some grease on the head gasket helped me out in this regard. I have replaced two of these and observed another. The tool of choice is here is a rubber mallet One caveat, all the covers I have replaced have been with the water pump off so you may have to adjust the above procedure. Hebert" Subject: [db] Cold start questions With all the talk of cold starts going around, I figured I'd ask a question about my '82 300CD. I leave in the Northeast and we had a couple days in the below 0 (F) range. I have recently moved to an apartment where I'm unable to plug in my block heater. After leaving the car overnight, I am unable to start it if the temp is below 0. Should I be able to, or am I expecting too much? The car always starts fine in if the temps are in the teens or higher. Honestly, I can't remember seeing temps this cold for a long time, and my MB certainly hasn't since I've owned it, so I really don't have anything to compare to. Bottom line - should an OM617 start without assistance in cold-soaked negative numbers, or am I expecting too much? With The Weather Channel expecting record lows (-18) at the end of the week, I need to find someplace to plug in. Thanks.
