Vernon, While I don't like throwing parts at partially diagnosed problems, I might replace the regulator/brush assembly. It's inexpensive $30-$90 (depending on whether it comes in a Bosch or MB box. Replacement is easy; it takes 10 minutes after you've done it once, still less than an hour first the time. If that wasn't the problem, you will have a spare for when, eventually, it does need replacement. Sam and everybody... In the never ending saga of the starter replacement/ignition switch? problem on my 240D the car continues to not start. I now suspect that the alternator may be bad. Although nobody has 'fessed up this may be due to a blown diode on the alternator from reversed polarity while charging. Does anybody know how to rule this possibility in/out, preferably with equipment no more sophisticated than a multimeter? For those who don't know, alternators have a diode in 'em which prevents 'em from draining the battery. This diode can get toasted from improper polarity during charging. Well, duh! Although I haven't yet implemented the splendid advice just imparted by Sam and Tom Durkin (can't find my ##-at-#-at-$ multimeter) I now have "a new theory of the case!" It turns out the glove compartment door was down. This means a bulb was shining... There it shone for nearly a week, apparently, until I went outside and attempted to start the car... Well, blow me down! I can only recall one dumber (electrical) story from my life. Many years ago I worked in the deep sea oil exploration business. We were working out of Puerto Madryn, Argentina, which is only about 1200 miles north of the Antarctic Circle and only a few hundred miles from the "Faukland/Malvinas" Islands over which Argentina and Britain clashed. In fact, that happened while I was down there. Anyway, we were into port for a crew change. We put back out to sea, got to the work area, and a contractually indispensable piece of equipment (magnetometer) wouldn't work. We tried everything. The crew chief got on the horn to our land base. Then to US HQ. Then to the manufacturer of the magnetometer by radiotelephone. Nothing worked. We went BACK into port where we were met by a manufacturer's technician who flew in from California! They took the cover off the machine. Tested and swapped circuit boards. While this was going on I looked back between the equipment rack and the bulkhead (wall) of the ship. The machine was unplugged! I went back there, picked up the cord, and (snickerin' in my fist) shouted "I FOUND THE PROBLEM!". You should have seen the color wash out of the faces of my bosses. True to the "brotherhood of the sea" everybody huddled and came up with a plan! The "Incident Report" got written up by both the manufacturer's tech and our people as "a power supply problem". Do y'all know the difference between a fairy tale and a sea story? A fairy tale starts out "Once upon a time". A sea story starts out "Now this is no shit...". This ain't a fairy tale. It is a sea story. VT - An Old Sailor. Well, that is a useful tidbit to know. Regardless of what else may going on I'm convinced that the ignition switch is wonky. As soon as I connected the ground strap after completing a 24 hr slow charge the glove box light came on even though the ignition switch was "off". However, it's entirely possible that it wasn't really "off" but that the key was simply in the "off" position. This weekend I'm gonna pop the unit from another wrecked car. Vernon, Alex, On my 115, it is also switched off with ignition. On a friend's 190E, however, it lights whenever glove box opens (which is much of the time because the door is warped), regardless of key position. That might be peculiar to a "Costal Delivery Option" rather than be model specific. With MB thoroughness, perhaps they permit the light to stay on to help prevent mildew in high humidity areas. Those of us living in central Texas seldom require that function in our cars. Glad you found the problem.
