Snails will pass you when you start out on a hill. IIRC, the 240D automatic is a four speed that starts off in second gear, and there is a trick you have to do to get it to start in first like when you are on a hill. Other than that, the 240D is the opposite of fast. The 240D teaches you zen driving. You will notice that the difference between 70 and 85 over a 50 mile trip depends more on traffic you hit than driving speed. You will notice that you aren't in as much of a hurry to get places, and when someone cuts you off, you don't care, because you weren't going to be in that spot on the road for another minute anyway. > 2. You may notice that the car will pick up a little pep if you drive it like you stole it - for some reason, these cars like to be made to work for a living. If it still turns out to be slow, but you like the way the car drives, you might want to find a 300D turbodiesel. > 3. Are the latter the correct maintenance > intervals for the fuel filters? 5K for oil changes seems about right, but people often go 10K *miles* between fuel filter changes (some 15K *miles*), so you're probably safe at 15K km. A lot of that time was spent figuring out the easiest way to get the first one out. The rest went pretty quick. (This is for a 83 300D). A couple of things I learned: 1. undo all the wires to all the glow plugs first. Then you can move that cable (more or less) out of your way. 2. An offset 12mm ratching box wrench turned out to be the best way to get the glow plugs out. I had a deep 12m socket for my 1/4" drive ratchet, but it was too deep and on some of the plugs there was no way to get the ratchet onto the socket. 3. Removing the heater hose at the back made it much easier to get to the rear glow plug. Messy, but easier. 4. It probably would have been easier to remove the fuel injection lines, but I didn't want to deal with that. Not necessarily faster, but easier.
