Although Earthlink has some stupid commercials, last I knew they were reasonably useful as an ISP. Haven't heard anything one way or another about connection quality, but AOL Time Warner now offers cheap access under the CompuServe and/or Netscape brands. Near 10 or 12 bucks a month. That may be the same package as most others in that price range, though, where the fine print says that extra charges may apply for live tech support. These days, you may have to determine your travel itinerary precisely, then hit a few ISP web sites to see if they have POPs within local calling distance. At least it's work. Keep telling yourself that. ;-) Alec > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-diesel-benz-at-digest.net > [mailto:owner-diesel-benz-at-digest.net]On Behalf Of john > Sent: Friday, February 27, 2004 10:05 PM > To: undisclosed-recipients: > Subject: [db] ot: road warrior "on ramps'? > > > It looks like I'm going to be doing the road warrior > gig through April... flying down to Tucson on Sunday > to teach three days of Solaris, week and a half later > back down to Oregon for 2 days of Solaris, then the > end of March in MO for a day of HP-UX and Solaris and > three days of Linux... then maybe three weeks in PA... > I think Denver and Red Hat are part of the mix too... > If I could line 'em all up at once I could just drive > to 'em all, but it never works that nicely. :) (BTW, > my '91 300d got 37.8mpg on the trip home from the last > Linux class in Oregon!!!) > > anyway... my question is this... what's a suitable > and inexpensive dialup service that I can access in > places like Sierra Vista, AZ, Mount Poconno, PA, Denver, CO, > and Jefferson City, MO??? > > At least in Oregon the hotel had high speed internet > access in the room... > > I've got a netzero dialup but all the crap that came > through in ads and popups isn't worth the "free" part. > > Any thoughts on using Earthlink? I use to have a 240D manual and enjoyed it. I was always a little jealous of the extra power that those W123 TDs had, but I preferred my manual transmission. If this can be done without major difficulty it may be worth exploring. Daniel F. Tilley ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Feb 2004 14:34:00 -0500 From: Mike Frank Subject: RE: [db] Humbled! Well, I found a solution. I put a big plastic bag over a cardboard box, and used it like a work sink. Put the manifold in and sloshed it out with gasoline. The stuff goes from tar to an evil black potion after a good soak in gas. Then I used a long bottle brush to get it clean. It was still black when I was done, but it was just grime soaked into the pores of the metal ...basically clean. I did the same thing to the ports, which were so blocked you couldn't see the valves. Then I used some paper towels to sop the soup out from around the valves, being careful not to let anything get in. Afterwards, I took the box out back and tossed a match in...good by problem! Someone asked if you begin to look like your car after a while...by the time I was done brushing this stuff clean, I was pitch black from head to toe. Fortunately, the gasket hadn't broken at the "holes, but in between. I coated both sides with a light coat of high temp silicone, and installed it in pieces. Doesn't seem to be leaking. One casualty...the shaft that connects the cruise solenoid with the throttle...broke one of those round snap connectors. Does anyone know where to get one? Starting was a bit scary...it was very unhappy, probably left too much goop in the ports. Doesn't seem to be damaged for it. Car is running great. Then my wife and daughter notice the smell... and I see wafts of smoke rolling out from the center of the dash... we were only a block away from the mexican resturant so I rolled the windows down and we parked it... when I shut it off some fairly serious smoke rolled out of the dash... not enough to begin shopping for a replacement car, but enough that I wasn't going to breath it. So we ate dinner, came out opened the doors and whoa. That's potent... so I grabbed my respirator out of the trunk, got the car started and opened all the windows and the sunroof... The windshield fogged up... but the defroster didn't really want to work... neither did the heater... fan buttons didn't do a thing... so we started to drive and the window cleared but my wife noticed the defrost vent was putting out hot air on her side... but not as much on my side... and that was with the a/c fully set to cold... The red light on the recirc valve stays lit... but the a/c controls don't seem to work... fuses are all ok, couldn't figure out which one to pull to disable the recirc vent though... Got back home ok (windows open and me driving with a respirator, getting over a cold and flying to AZ in the morning...). The cruise, radio, lights, signals and all work ok... just the climate control... just another surprise left by Rube Goldberg. I wonder if my fire insurance covers stuff like this... Well, obviously, a Dodge ain't a Mercedes, but some years ago the first thing on a crisp winter morning I started my 78ish Dodge pickup. Noticed that the gas gauge read "E". I thought: "this is strange. I filled it brim full last night". By the time that thought traversed my brain (and that's a really short trip!) billowing clouds of horrible, thick, black smoke began to rise from the dash, immediately filling the cab of the truck. I was about to take my baby boy to Montessori. We bailed out and called the fire department. Within 5 minutes the interior of the truck was gutted. A word of wisdom to all: Keep your battery ground cable loose enough to immediately disconnect it in an emergency. If I'd thought to do that I'd likely have saved the truck. Doing so could save your life.
