Potts" Subject: [db] '85 300SD Hello All, Looking for a few comments and hints. I'm getting ready to take delivery of my first Benz. I purchased the car from a friend of a friend who is a fanatic with detail. The person is a German national and naturally thinks the German engineering is superb. I have to agree for the most part. Actually, I purchased the car without test driving or even seeing it in person. I did receive pictures though. It has never been wrecked, painted or for the most part been out in bad weather. It was used to drive back and forth from NY to Florida. If interested you can see them at the following link: www.Vacuum-Pack.com/Benz.htm . It is a 1985 300SD Turbo Diesel in near perfect condition and very well maintained. This car is from Germany and has 180,000 miles. The A/C was replaced last year and then the cruise control was inoperable. Any suggestions what to look for to fix the cruise? What kind of maintenance is absolutely necessary to keep this beauty running tip top. Any other comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and I really look forward to joining the Benz Class. If it has been maintained as you have indicated, it will give decades of service. I have had two problems with the cruise on my '87 SDL: 1. The amplifier went out at about 140,000 miles. Cost about $300.00 but was a quick fix. Others on this list have been successful repairing the amp. Maybe they will chime in. 2. The little plastic rod end broke off the linkage in the engine compartment; had one in stock. It took about 15 minutes to get it on and about two test drives to get it adjusted. This happened at about 160,000 mi. Cheers, Richard Arnold '87 SDL '73 Alfa Spider ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Mar 2004 23:10:04 -0500 From: "Jonathan A. Brown" Subject: [db] CHEAP DIAL-UP ISP Hi , This is especially for John, I have used BIGZOO.COM 's dialup for about 4 years. $55 a year, for 150 hours a month. good connect speed(for dialup) , seems to be plenty of #s , for any area.. only works from USA, unlike COMPUSERVE, which has world coverage. BIGZOO.COM also sells an "online" rechargeable phone card ; 2.9 cents a min. in USA, & EXCELLENT value to international,; UK is 2.2 cents ; spain is 2.4 ; NEW ZEALAND is 3 cents...etc. BigZoo.com is a long distance phone company that is based in Pasadena and it offers long distance phone service within the 48 United States at 2.9-cents a minute, and this is with a monthly fee of just 75-cents REGARDS, Jonathan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Mar 2004 09:19:01 +0000 From: dieseljohn-at-comcast.net Subject: Re: [db] CHEAP DIAL-UP ISP thanx for the thought... I'm down in San Diego right now... have high speed connection right now, cost me $19.95 for the week, but I can expense it on this contract... heading to OR on Sunday to teach Solaris, hotels in Eugene had free internet... next stop is San Antonio... haven't made reservations or researched there yet... then off to st. louis... one of my clients is a provider so I may get a deal on dialup if needed in MO. later, john > Hi , > This is especially for John, I have used BIGZOO.COM 's dialup for > about 4 years. $55 a year, for 150 hours a month. > good connect speed(for dialup) , seems to be plenty of #s , for any > area.. only works from USA, unlike COMPUSERVE, which has world coverage. > > BIGZOO.COM also sells an "online" rechargeable phone card ; 2.9 cents a > min. in USA, & EXCELLENT value to international,; > UK is 2.2 cents ; spain is 2.4 ; NEW ZEALAND is 3 cents...etc. > > BigZoo.com is a long distance phone company that is based in Pasadena and > it offers long distance phone service within the 48 United States at > 2.9-cents a minute, and this is with a monthly fee of just 75-cents > > REGARDS, > Jonathan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Mar 2004 02:47:54 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: [db] driving vs. flying... if I have the option and time of driving instead of flying I will... I will also not fly America West again! They messed up flights both to and from San Diego... both times Alaska bailed them out... We were supposed to have 1st class seats coming back because of the mess up going down... but the plane had problems, flight delayed, missed the connection to Seattle so they moved us to Alaska Air... seems they messed up and didn't send our luggage... guess the TSA got involved... despite the fact the luggage was screened already it couldn't just be moved from one airplane to another... Oh yeah, we got to do the full search thing twice because we weren't flying on the original tickets... what a hassle... I'd rather sit in my Mercedes 300d for three days then put up with the 8 to 10 hours of nonsense it takes to fly. We turned the rental car in at 3:30 for a 6:12pm flight... took a shuttle bus with all our luggage... went through security and all that stuff a solid 2 hrs before it was to take off... what a hassle... now I'm wondering if our luggage will make it here before we drive down to Eugene on Sunday... :( the terrorists won... air travel is no longer a modern convenience or pleasure... john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #1398 **********************************
