So I forgot that you guys did not hear the entire story. So the short version is ........ I bid on it and "won" the auction. The guy agreed to take it to a mechanic for a PPI (somewhat unwillingly), but he did. He said he did not want me to "nickel and dime him to death" and I agreed not to. Well ...... the compression came in very low. One cylinder was 16.5 and the wear limit on that engine is 18. Three cylinders were "around" 18 and 2 around 19. Thanks to Stu Ritter, I had the "real" numbers, because at first the seller claimed that the wear limit on that car was 15 and I was OK to buy. And the AC (climate control) was all messed up. The compressor was "jumped" with non factory wiring...... it took several minutes for it to come on at all and then it cut out if you honked the horn. ????? The guy had replaced the instrument cluster at least three times, (so there is some question as to the mileage) and some of the instruments (like oil and temp) were still very jumpy and did not work reliably....... and a bunch of other smaller stuff. But the killer (obviously) was the compression. So I told him that I was not going to buy the car and he said he would send my deposit back... I am already "eating" a non-refundable plane ticket to Phoenix and 4 days of kennel lodging for my dogs, plus the well spent money for the PPI. So that is what I am waiting for. I sent him an email this morning with a polite request to use PayPal. I don't want to have to wonder if a "check is in the mail". We will see. I am giving him till tomorrow, before I decide what action to take next. The car does run. To be honest I would probably not put it in if I were selling the car as to not scare off buyers and unfairly lower his value on the car. When buying a used car it is BUYER BEWARE! If you don't check the car its your fault. I have always refused allowing my vehicles being sold to be taken to mechanics for this exact reason. They are welcome to let their mechanics come and drive the car but on a 10+ year old vehicle there is always something wrong. I'm thinking that I'll continue on with the proposed 4.0L engine swap and am giving thoughts about either fixing the '83 300D and selling or using the engine in my '87 Cherokee... I don't have the time to mess with either though... If you're interested in the '83 300d let me know... I guess I find it interesting that you think disclosing *the whole truth* about the car would *unfairly* ????? lower the value of the car. And I think it is an issue with him. He *is* selling the car for "some" reason. And he wants to get as much for it as he can. And IMHO disclosing the whole truth would very fairly lower the true value of the car as opposed to the perceived value on a car with an assumed "good" engine. He may NOT have known about the low compression on the first auction, but now he does. I also find it interesting that you say first "BUYER BEWARE" and "if you don't check the car its your fault" and then state that you won't let someone have the car inspected. I cannot imagine a true professional mechanic leaving his shop and coming out to your house to *drive the car*. So by definition you seem to be limiting your definition of mechanic to "my brother who works on cars at night" type of mechanic. Some of us don't have one of those. ;^) So by not letting them get the car inspected, you are then asking them to trust you???? There is a huge difference between nitpicking every small detail and finding out if the car needs a new engine. If the seller does not want to let me find out *exactly* what I am buying ..... I will go spend my money elsewhere. Jan Guthrie 1985 300TD Robert Chase wrote: > It might not be an issue to him. The car does run.
