Robert I think I can add to Derick's note. I drove a mid 80's 5000 from TX to MI. Beautiful car, but it is one that you constantly have to "concentrate" on driving, steering is so sensitive that the second you take your eye off the road ahead, it will wander away from straight. It was totally unforgiving and left one more tired than normal on long drives. I think the 4000 has the same basic mechanicals and a 4 cyl engine as opposed to the 5 cylinder in the 5000. Fun to drive, good road handling, just very touchy on the steering. The Rang Rover was the biggest single moneymaker for the repair shop. Heads warp, electrics fail constantly (sensors and harness connection points that corrode) and parts cost almost as much if not more the MB bits. Unless you want another project to fill your weekends, I would not recommend owning one for daily use. That said, they sure are fun to drive, when running. Good luck, whatever road you take. Edward BTW - I notice some of the fellows list cars they own (or have owned?). I normally do not to list past/present due to space limitations. ;-) but thought it would be fun to do it just once: 62 Falcon, 66 VW bug, 67 bug, 65 Impala wagon with 327 Vette engine *that was fun*, 72 VW transporter, 74 Fiat 124 Spyder; 77 Impala wagon, 166, 144 and 142 type Volvos various vintages, 64 Jaguar E type FHC, 67 Dodge Coronet 440 (ugh! got rid of it fast). Presently have 64 MB 220Sb, 93 MB E300TD, 54 MGTD (in boxes for tinker toy assembly), there were/are more, but daily drivers of the modern era do not turm me on, they are just tools to go from A to B. john wrote: >A good friend of mine offered his '98 Range Rover 4.0L V8 >with 68,000 miles on it to me today. Lessee.... * 1960 Ford Falcon ( got it for painting a fence. Fence-owner got the best of the deal. ) * 1967 SAAB 96 ( 850CC Two-stroke. Fried its crank ) * 1967 SAAB 95 ( for parts ) * 1960 Ford Falcon ( just more of a bad thing... ) * 1968 Ford LTD ( Galaxy with better seats ) * 1963 Pontiac Lemans ( fast & furious, most dangerous damn car I ever owned. Transmission between the rear wheels ) * 1969 Ford Fairlane ( The five-cylinder Ford ) * 1955 Triumph TR2 ( namesake for tr2.com. Still in my garage ) * 1958 MGA ( Gorgeous shape. A real ass-mans car ) * 1971 Yamaha DS6 ( 250CC Two-stroke motorcycle. Zoom! Fried its crank. ) * 1980 Kawasaki 650 ( only had it for a month. Seating pos'n was terrible. Great engine, though ) * 1983 BMW R65 ( Pucketa-pucketa ) * 1976 Honda Gold Wing ( aka the "old Wing". 76 was the first year ) * 1972 Norton Commando 750 ( I really miss this one.... Light & strong, such a throaty roar ) * 1972 ( I think ) Suzuki 350 ( Didn't fry its crank...)x * 1980 Suzuki 1100 - In a straight line, I think this is the fastest vehicle I've ever owned. If you whacked the throttle open to come out of a turn, it would do a wheelie in the middle of the turn. It would do wheelies at freeway speed. I bought it from a guy who had been using it to do the quarter mile at the Fremont dragstrip. * 1976 Kawasaki KH400 triple * 1974 BMW "Toaster Tank" R75/5 with Russian Sidecar * 1971 Yamaha DS6 ( when I discovered that my next door neighbor had a motorcycle the same make & model as my very first one, I just had to buy it and restore it...) * 1984 Jaguar XJ6 ( "the money pit" ) * 1967 Cadillac ( Pretend you're rich ) * 1976 VW Van ( PITA. One problem after another. ) * 1991 Nissan King Cab P/U ( Only new car I ever bought. Paid cash. Drove it 130,000 miles and then rammed it into a Lexus that spun out on the freeway one rainy day. Great little truck ) * 1972 Datsun 1200 ( Neat little car. Where can I get another? ) * 1984 BMW R80/7 ( "the Blue Lady" - we outfitted it with a zoomy plastic fairing, painted blue metallic by Yours Truly ) * 1973 Honda 350 ( bought for the kid, fixed it up, decided the kid wasn't up to the responsibility of motorcycling, didn't want to have to scrape his remains off the road. ) * 197? Volvo 164E ( very rare 6-cylinder Volvo. Got it for free. Gas mileage was 5MPG. Never could get it up to snuff. Learned a bunch about early Bosch "D-Jetronic" fuel injections ) * Mercedes 300D ( probably the best car I ever bought ) * 1999 Chevy Astro Cargo Van ( reliably trundles me, my wife, and loads of crap between the Bay Area and Fresno. Has working A/C. Has the fuel pump from hell. Screeches in our ears as we drive. ) * 1946 Cessna 140 ( My first airplane. Cost me $13K, got 18 MPG, cruised 80 MPH. Sold it a year later for $14K ) * 1954 Cessna 170 ( Second airplane. Four seats. ) * 1976 Beech Sundowner ( Current airplane. Four seats, cruises 120MPH. ) ... Okay, let's see John's list.
