Last I saw poor old Rambo, it was front wheel drive with a mismatched rear d44 waiting for a front that matched so it could hook up. What a battleaxe though. Speaking of jeeps, I drove the poor old (376k mile) 74 cherokee to BART today. Didn't feel like driving it all the way to walnut creek, and the 190D is literally deafening. Its life in Massachusetts reared its ugly head again, and the exhaust pipe between the header and first muffler has about a four inch section that is missing. The upside is it sounds like a race car running open headers. The downside is it doesn't perform like the last car I drove open headers (69 buick gran sport with a big block). Corners a bit better though :) Rusty actually had the pipe, so this should be a simple matter of unbolt and install. Shop around here wanted something like $120 to install and $115 for the pipe, Rusty sold it to me for $53. So for you w201 owners, you actually can buy the complete exhaust system from Rusty in pieces for less than wholesale in the bay area, and with enough penetrating oil and beer, repair your exhaust. Those were put in Lincolns for two years, I think. It was also used in the Winnebago Lesharo around that timeframe, the goofy looking mini class A motorhome that looked like a limoed minivan of some sort. Regardless, it was a fun little engine in a BMW until it needed work. Then it drained your wallet AND maxed out credit cards. And all in one repair :) That Lincoln was a Fox chassis, so think long wheelbase mustang and you've got it. Oddball strut front end, with a rear suspension that won't hook up. That car is also several hundred pounds heavier than the 80s 5-series, so don't expect great performance from it either. The newer BMW turbodiesels are amazing little engines. The 530td has more torque stock than the M5. And it leaves a stopsign like it. I almost bought one of the old 524tds (same engine as that Lincoln) for a song, but even as a few hundred dollar ride, it didn't seem like a good idea. I had the same experience recently with Costco. I went in and picked out 2 new tires for the SDL to replace the one with the tumor on the inner sidewall and the worst other tire, thinking I needed to have 2 like tires on an axle. They spent more than 1 1/2 hours rotating, balancing; dismounted 2 tires and remounted them (since the spare wheel is different looking on this car). They carefully cleaned and resealed the bead on one that had some plating flaking/corrosion on the bead and was slow leaking. Needless to say the car rides better and smoother with carefully rebalanced tires! They told me I didn't need new tires yet and charged me $0.00 for their labor. The technicians seem more intelligent and knowledgeable than your average tireshop guy. Their prices are quite good in case you force them to sell you some.
