Robert, I live in Texas where it can get warm, thought of tint but didn't want my diesel to look like a getaway car. I found a company that sells clear film that blocks UV and maybe other frequencies--promised to reduce heat gain by a significant amount. It was also extremely expensive, required special installation and was promoted for use in historical buildings with no mention of autos. Maybe a similar product is now available for cars. I settled on the lightest-available-tint metallic automotive film, installed by a high-end car stereo shop. It is barely noticeable, supposedly reduces heat gain by a significant amount and does not appear to have degraded over the last 5 years. I am careful about what I use to clean it; ammonia based cleaners damage the film. The plastic film distorts the view very slightly but occasionally noticeably--sometimes I roll down a window to see details more clearly. Careful installation is important. Originally, I planned to do it myself but see too many cars with botched tint jobs. Worst looking are cars where they tried to remove the botched tint. While sometimes capable of fine work, my abilities to screw things up seem to have no bounds. I removed the windows, cleaned them thoroughly and took them to the shop--good opportunity to reseal rear window, replace window channels. The installer spent time re-cleaning them and, as time has proven, did a great job applying the film. I can't say I notice a difference in heat gain. It's probably there but the interior is still brutally hot in the summer. Still, I plan to do the same for my next car. So, Im considering tinting the windows on my 126. Mostly because I wear shorts a good bit and don't like toasting the back of my legs sitting on a backside roasting MBtex seat. Any thoughts? My car is Black and looks sinister enough just as it is and Im wondering if tinting the windows would go overboard for that "Darth Vader" look. Im not a huge fan of window tint but Im also not a huge fan of towels in my seats either :) http://beostar.paunix.org/newmbzpics Robert Chase ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 May 2004 11:19:25 -0400 From: "Jim Hoffman" Subject: Powerchoke WAS: [db] Another 190d > aw. you IDI guys are missing out. You'd rather have a nice IDI Turbo like me! ;) Jim/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 May 2004 07:36:03 -0700 From: Nick.Eckert-at-theaustin.com Subject: [db] New Owner Good Morning, I am the brand new owner of a 1981 240D. Bought it this weekend for $1300. Vehicle is a one owner vehicle with 231k on the clock and in top notch shape. 100% original with the analog becker radio and first aid kit (with little MB first aid pamphlets) still intact. It's got a couple little problems/questions: Sunroof opens, but won't shut electically...I have to manually shut it via the trunk. I am thinking this is a switch problem. Thoughts? Radiator leaks...There is a 300D in the Pick-a-part, I was thinking of pulling the radiator from it to replace my leaking one. Has anyone ever converted a 300D to a 5-speed manual? I much prefer manuals in diesels....Autos rob too much power from the engine. Where is a good reliable place to get parts? I would appreciate direct responses, since I am in digest mode.
