Hello, I agree with Alec if you want an exact copy with the original tumbler setup. If your going for the key get a new lock cylinder at the same time.(unless your cylinder is new) Another option is to buy a new cylinder/key from Randy or Rusty or (insert your vendor here). The key will be different but in my opinion they are "beefier". I replaced three of them two the easy way one the hard way. Time to do this was 5 minutes and 4 hours respectively. Cars I have done this in are two 1985 190d's and an 1982 240d. The key is thicker and the cylinder has a larger opening and tumbler setup. In short they have a more robust construction. (at least the 3 I have dealt with) The only drawback is that you will have two different keys. I am sure you wanted a valet key anyhow. ;) Good luck Derick - -----Original Message----- From: Alec_Cordova-at-Dell.com [mailto:Alec_Cordova-at-Dell.com] Sent: Thursday, May 20, 2004 9:34 AM To: diesel-benz-at-digest.net Subject: RE: [db] Renewed vowes with my 240D?? Jim, You could get the keys, ignition lock, door locks, glovebox and trunk lock from a recycler--that way same key will work everywhere, cost will probably be same as keys from that dealer. The big rub comes in replacing old tumbler. It will have to be drilled out if you don't have the old key. That nasty task may cost as much as simply buying key from dealer. Maybe prices went up recently but just the keys were substantially less expensive at my dealer a few years ago. The tumbler assembly with keys cost $95 (incl tax) from my dealer last July. Again, you need the old key to get old tumbler out. Try Rusty or Randy Steel, maybe they can give you better price on old key replacement. If you need substantial body work (maybe other repairs) it will cost FAR more than replacing with another 240D already in good shape. Like with Alec, the cost/benefit is dependent on how much you love this particular car. Making one good car from two marginal cars can be cost effective and a great adventure that leaves you with tons of spare parts (and wondering how to dispose of an empty shell). Often a spouse will offer input on schemes like that--better check first. Simple floorpan replacement is cheap. Take your truck out into the country, and find some road signs that aren't laden with bullet/shot holes, and snag them. Weld them into the floors. Done. :) As far as the key, Rusty claims to be able to get anything that a dealer can, I'd give him a call. Who knows, he might be able to get a key for you. Memory serving me, your 240D is a four speed. Rent a two wheel dolly instead of a two axle trailer. Jack up the front of the car, and slide the trailer underneath with the truck (note, this takes a steady hand, a bit of skill, and some money to send the SWMBO to the mall with so she doesn't catch you doing something crazy like this). Put the car in neutral, and drag it. (Though, my reason for doing this with the vehicle I did it with was that I deemed it safer than using another vehicle to yank it onto the trailer. The car in question wouldn't start, and I hadn't acquired the $60 harbor freight winch that believe it or not, I have gotten more than three uses out of and it still works) K - -- Kevin Pekarek Redwood City, CA (near San Francisco) and Los Osos, CA (near San Luis Obispo) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 May 2004 15:42:32 -0400 From: "Jim Hoffman" Subject: Re: [db] Renewed vowes with my 240D?? > On Thu, May 20, 2004 at 12:30:27PM -0400, Jim Hoffman wrote: > > I've been waffling (No, I haven't been taking lessons from John Kerry) > > about whether to junk the 240D or have a body shop fix her up. Jim/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 May 2004 16:19:25 -0400 From: Robert Chase Subject: Re: [db] Renewed vowes with my 240D?? I dunno, Paint and body work is not really that big of a deal if you do the prep work yourself. The way the body is prepared for paint is the most critical part and the part that most cheap paint jobs screw up. Personally I would rather dissasemble and paint a car than dissasemble and put an engine and transmission in a "good" condition body. Its about the same amount of work and afterwards you have two entirely different results. Engine and transmission swap only gets you a car that is in "good" condition and a paint job gets you a car that is in near factory new condition. You could probably get a pretty good deal on a paint job if you found a body shop that did a lot of work and was privately owned and flexible. I once had a minor collision in one of my Honda's and did the repairs myself. A $700 quote from the insurance company ended up costing me a grand total of $25 to repair myself. I had a car with pop up lamps and my car had been backed into. The panel on the lamp was $10 and the paint job was $15 because I went to a shop that was painting a car the same factory color that my car was painted. It matched perfectly. If you did all the prep work and masking you would be suprised how far your paint job costs go down. The paint is not cheap but the labor of masking and preparing the body is most of the cost involved. A pre masked and dissasembled car is an effortless spray job.
