I know I am pretty new to this list but can we keep the Parts Supplier rhetoric and flames to a smolder. The very simple reality is that many people choose their parts suppliers for different reasons. Some choose due to location, in person service, lowest prices, etc. If someone has a gripe, please take it off-list and keep the comments constructive on list. I'm looking at this bent fender on my son's '82 300d and trying to figure out how to pull it out... slide hammer, 2x4 and a makeshift press, a cable and the Jeep... a big hammer... cutting the fender out and welding a new one in is the answer, but my torch is in the Monster Garage 100 miles from here and Derick's wreck is 50 miles west of the line between here and there... my son doesn't care... I just want to make it functional for him, it was a good deal and if it dies two months from now we'll have gotten our money's worth out of this car... but something tells me this '82 300d will live for a long, long time and attach itself to my son like it has me already... I can't explain it, but the feel of the 123 is so much softer, smoother, more relaxed then the 124. I love my 124's economy, power and handling, but the 123 just feels so comfortable... hence my surge of interest in a rather non-functional (on a couple of levels) 300CD. Not having back doors makes taking toys home from the nursery on Sundays more challenging... but if that's the only issue I'll drive the other benz... I do hope this '85 300CD is as described... Kevin, came over this morning and mentioned he has a tow bar I can use! Is that cool or what... (he was looking at the '82 in the drive and asked how I got it here... Salesman drove it up 92 westbound to 280 (you bay area types know that hill is truly unkind), saw smoke coming out then the engine quit. It has 0 compression on one cylinder and low compression on another. It still cranks, so at a minimum, the engine is a rebuildable core. Being an 85, it is arguably the pinnacle of w123 engineering. I've forwarded more details on to John. John, if you decide to pass on it, forward it on to the list. Like John said, you're looking at at LEAST that. Especially since it is not a runner. Car haulers don't like dealing with things they can't drive onto the trailer. I had talked with the seller a little bit, since it intrigued me, but it's registered non-op, which makes things a little annoying when trying to park it on the street, or flat-tow it (which would mean you aren't deadheading with a trailer). It sounds like shipping it would be mighty interesting, cause there's parts that go with it (like an OM601) that wouldn't easily go in the car or on a carrier. I had somewhat thought if I had to go get something from the midwest that didn't run, I was going to either rent a trailer one way (to prevent deadheading, even if I did have a trailer), or finding someone out here who wanted their car delivered somewhere near where I am picking the car up. What really shyed me away from this one was not only the high miles (which means some serious suspension work is probably getting ready to be needed, or is already needed, and I already have ONE 190D that runs like a watch that I am about halfway done tinkering with suspension on it), but the fact that it was NOT a runner, and there was no easy way to verify that the spare engine was actually a runner. He made it sound like he swapped the pulled the original with over 250k and put another one in, but has said that it won't run until the other one is put in. If I was Derick and had a spare engine lying around, I'd consider this, but not being registered for the street and living on a street where the cops like to hide behind cars to nail people blowing stopsigns, I don't want to deal with them catching the non-opped car hitting the street and making fees due. I am always willing to help a lister out getting something out here over to them, since we have a plethora of rust free examples that can be had for fairly cheap. I don't see an easy way of this one getting back to your place, without you spending way more than it is worth to get it back there, or coming out to get it. If you do come out here to get it, don't forget diesel is over $2.30 in california, so fill up in nevada before you come in. You're a bit out of range of the powerchoke and my oncall schedule :) K - -- Kevin Pekarek Redwood City, CA (near San Francisco) and Los Osos, CA (near San Luis Obispo) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 May 2004 16:48:30 -0500 From: "Vernon Tuck" Subject: Re: [db] f/s 85 300CD needs engine near sf, ca (not mine) Well, one of these days maybe we'll deck out my honkin' old 18 wheel truck for hauling old MBs around.
