At a point in the now distant past, they were (I think) at a camp together. Adrienne (my sister) was getting rather annoyed with the tempo at which Katie was going about something. She pressed Katie to hurry up, to which Katie responded, "I do things slowly!" This seemed the epitome of all 240D rag lines, so Katie she is. Of course, my sister then accused Katie with, "You think slowly!" She pouted, I think. But can you not all see what a perfect name it is for her? Actually, she's definitely not the slowest car in the world. Granted, I have taken to mashing the accelerator to the floor at the slightest need for motion, but I am told that this is not harmful to these tuffies, and I out-accelerate most truckers and senior citizens, and keep up with everybody else except the yuppies with their sport mucketies. I am looking forward to getting it out of the mountains, though. Interestingly enough, though, the car mostly sat for months before I bought her. Now that I am using her more, I can feel her limbering up. Yeehaa! Giddyap! And the handling.....I think I could win a winding back road race with Katie over a cop car simply because Katie handles so well. Still, I don't plan to try....8^) I do have a few questions. I will not be checking my mail for awhile after this due to moving, but shoot the answers back whenever you get a chance; my box should hold them for me. 1. I have some slack in my accelerator linkage such that I can push the pedal a bit without affecting the engine at all. I can see the telescoping linkage which I could adjust to correct this. Will I hurt anything if I just lengthen the linkage so the slack goes away? It is annoying to have it, and furthermore I don't think I am actually getting to the full-throttle stop when I floor it. Maybe a good thing....... 2. Why must I use C rated oil? I put SL 40-weight in it and it seems fine. I am planning to go synthetic soon, but I was curious. The oil said it was created to resist thermal breakdown, which was my main concern. Furthermore, it doesn't seem to be sludging too badly. As long as I don't overmile it I'll be OK, right? 3. My back brakes were dragging a bit when I first got the thing. I don't think they are now. However, the pedal was also a bit inconsistent^Wnormally it was very tight, but sometimes it got so sloppy it worried me (though it still had plenty of stopping power.) I am assuming that the system is simply having to get "woke up" since it seems much better now and had sat for a long time. Is this a dangerous assumption? Anyhow, whatever the feedback is, I'll have to deal with it in MI. See y'all later! You're great! Yes, you SHOULD adjust the slack out of the accelerator linkage. Oil. Due to the diesel fuel and to the ~20 to 1 compression ration (compared to ~8 to 1 internal compression on a gas motor of similar vintage), the oil in diesel motors must deal with a different set of chemicals, sediments, etc. C rated oils are engineered to accommodate those demands. Non-C rated oils are not. I'll reiterate the recommendation for Shell Rotella T or Chevron Delo 400 as fully suitable conventional oils, and that you should require a C rating as one condition in selecting a synthetic oil. The behavior improvements you are seeing from driving, especially after Katie sat for so long, are very, very typical. They also should serve to encourage regularly heavy use, which it sounds like you are fitting right in to. The back brakes could also fit into this category. It doesn't sound like you are risking impending doom by giving them a little longer to see how they develop, especially if you have made a visual inspection to confirm that you're not already half way through the pad backing on any single inner or outer pad. And I'm glad to hear about the handling. When rubber suspension and steering parts wear out, things get a little sloppy. Your description suggests that yours are in fine shape still. Good luck with the move, Alec Cordova Taylor, Texas 89 300CE, 171K Previous 85 300D and 80 240D, among other Benzes, so I know just how endearing the W123 can be. > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-diesel-benz-at-digest.net > [mailto:owner-diesel-benz-at-digest.net] On Behalf Of Jason R Bassett > Sent: Friday, June 11, 2004 2:14 PM > To: diesel-benz-at-digest.net > Subject: [db] Katie > > > My 240D "Katie" is named after one of my sister's friends.
