Problem turned out to be a bad chassis ground as in no chassis ground. Where is the chassis ground on a 240D(123)?. On the 300SD(126) it runs from the starter to the frame but I cannot find one on the 123. I had an alternator that wouldn't charge after rebuild, a temp gauge that would jump around at anything over an idle. I took a set of jumper cables and hooked from the battery to the alternator bracket and the alternator went from 12.5 to 13.7 and the temp gauge stopped doing it's little dance. Nice little spark show when I hooked up to the alternator bracket. ;) Also, where is the A/C relay? I'm not getting power to the low pressure switch for the A/C. Is it the relay behind the passenger side kick panel? If not what is that relay for? Yesterday I pulled the cylinder head for sale to a list member. That thing is approximately 95# with camshaft ! With no cam shaft it weighed out 85#. Cast IRON head, it is no wonder this engine lasts a million miles with care. Head gasket was perfect I saw no leaks at all. I am a 201 fan myself but the 601.xxx engine is a tinker toy compared to the 617.xxx engine as far as contruction quality. That is saying allot because the 601 is a great engine as well. If I where to rig my own power generation plant for home use I would love to have one of these 617's with the driveline going to the dynamo. The car runs, but is in the middle of some repairs (electric window motors, for instance), and I've run out of time to work on it. It's got a Sears battery (which may need to be charged, I'll have to check), new rear axle (replaced both halves 5,000 miles ago), and a few other odds and ends. Haven't driven it in a while, but I did drive it to where I'm storing it right now (maybe a year ago). Asking $750 (since this is really a project or parts car), local buyers preferred! I can be reached at: superk -at- umich.edu Thanks.
