A story in today's Detroit News explains how the vehicle ID numbering system (VIN) will [0]soon run out of unique numbers. According to the article, a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers says, 'Longer codes would require a major overhaul of computer systems that would dwarf the challenges and expenses spawned by the Y2K computer dilemma.' Golly, if it's that serious maybe I should start stocking up on MREs and ammunition in preparation for the day the assembly lines come to a screeching halt." Anyone on the list near I-5? (WA, OR or CA) My son is heading south toward his next Air Force assignment... he just pulled out of Seattle and is heading down to I-10 in LA, then turns left until he hits Tucson... He's only supposed to drive 500 miles a day... sheesh, they didn't make us do stuff like that in the Army in the '70's... ;) I'd drive for 18 hours in one sitting... and I guess a few folks tried that and didn't survive, hence the "new" rules... ;) Either that or the Air Force is just "different" then the Army... hard to say... Anyway, I figure I'd check to see if anyone is near I-5 or I-10 on the list in case he has car troubles... after all he is driving an '82 Mercedes 300d with 275,000 miles on it... :) It's been list members that have helped me on prior trips on I-5... one friend down in Medford came out with a spare alternator and helped me get back on the road... I was on a rush trip home with an old J10 I'd bought down in the bay area... my wife was sick and the help was greatly appreciated... wife ended up in the hospital the next day... I was able to be there because of the help from a friend on the list... Thanx again Wes!!! I'm sure other folks have stories like that from these lists... Hope you all are having a great 4th. We live in the greatest country in the world... it's about freedom... it is slipping away though... :( john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #1499 **********************************
