I found the problem. There may be a lesson in here someplace. Here's what I did: - - When I replaced the belt, I made sure everything was turning freely, assuming that everything works the same with our without power...never assume. - - When the problem kept happening, I assumed it was the jockey wheel. So I chucked it up and turned it smooth, checked the bearings, and put it back....never assume. So where was the problem? It's the weather. When the a/c pops on, the belt stalls with a shriek and a puff of smoke. When the belt stalls, the Klima relay turns off the a/c, which allows the pulley to freewheel, and so the problem goes away. Then the driver pulls over, turns off the car (which resets the Klima), looks under the hood as if he knows exactly what to do, scratches his head, and decides to drive on. A way down the road, the a/c kicks in again.... Why is this happening? Because the compressor is fershitzen (I think that's the German technical term for it). How can you detect a bad compressor (at least, with a 190 or other Merc with a Nippondenso compressor)? First, pull off the serp belt. Now turn the pulley with your hands...it will turn freely. Now turn the locking plate with your hands...it will also turn freely. The only way to tell is to remove the Klima relay, short out the compressor (Klima pins 5 and 7), and try to turn the pulley. That's how the pulley gets locked to the internals. Anyone know where the Klima is? Maybe I'll save that one for the question and answer session.... About that oil leak dripping above my left foot -- someone suggested that it was causing the lights on my dash to short out. I've lately had to amp up the knob to the highest power to get any kind of illumination there. If this is true, what other kind of damage might the oil leak be doing that I should get checked?
