The engine has something like 350k miles, smokes a bit when first starts but clears up after a few minutes running. Tires are near new el-cheapos. Interior is bad, the leather seats have had much better days, the wood is all pretty good. The body isn't rusted too bad, one wrinkle in the rear passenger panel. Color is white. As the wise Derick would say, move your wallet to your front pocket and run. If the dash is in pieces or not there, you're going to pay way more (price of this monster included) than you would on a nice car of John's vintage, and not have something you can work on yourself. The W210 is infested with computer controls, and the OM606 is equally infested. I don't imagine getting the dash happy will happen without dealer involvement, and even then, you're stuck with a car that had been in a wreck, was most likely stolen and joyridden (until it was abandoned for wrecked), then recovered. The seller knows that putting this car back together probably isn't worth it, and probably already got his insurance payout, so he's just looking to get more money out of his loss. More power to him. This is a good car to buy if you have a W210 with a horked engine. This is not a good car to put back together, and believe me, I've put together cars that most give up on. Save your money, and find yourself a nice 90-93 W124 turbo. You'll be far happier with it in the short run, and into it for less money in the long run. This almost sounds like a B2 piston failure, except that it has first gear. JB, any comments on this one? With apologies to Willy. I was just reading the thread on the tranny problems with the '81 SD. I realize it might pertain to a problem I'm having with my '84 300D Turbo (186,000 mi.). I had just finished replacing a leaky door vacuum switch the day before when my daughter reported the tranny slipping in all forward gears. The problem onset was sudden. Tranny slips, then catches and behaves normally. Reverse gear is fine. Does this sound like the "dreaded" B2 piston failure? Does it sound like the band is also going or gone? Has anyone successfully done the "Easley maneuver" replacing the B2 without completely pulling the tranny? TIA for any thoughts or any BTDTs.
