An 88 four banger diesel? I thought they went fivebanger in 86. Anyways. The hood pad can't hurt any. From what I hear, the 2.2 hood pad is cheaper than the 2.5 hood pad. Don't know why, but both fit. (Prices may be different if you're not stateside.) What is noisy about it? If it's the diesel rattle, the 2.2 and 2.5s are actually pretty quiet, unless you have an injector going south, or unless you have a hydraulic valvelash compensator going out. If it's exhaust noise, replacing the exhaust goes a long way. Often times on diesels, the muffler or resonator (my 190D has one of each) gets holes in the top, that can't be seen from the bottom. The noise on startup could be injectors, could be the compensators (lifters, I guess). I think it's easier to get the injectors out if you pull the intake manifold, but if you have long fingers or a good tool collection, you can probably do it without pulling the manifold. The upside of pulling the manifold is you get to clean all the soot and grime out of it, which can't hurt things any. Most owners take these off after the first oil change. (like me) They do reduce the noise though. Hood padding will help and I would put it there anyhow to shield the hood from heat that will cause the hood paint to fail premature. (clear coat flakes off then the paint oxidizes and fades.)
