What I am currently doing is tracking down every ad that I can find with a 300CD in it and faxing it to the adjuster. I have also gotten figures from NADA and sent those over. If anyone has a current copy of "Old Car Price Guide" who can send me the page for the '82 300CD, that would be great. Otherwise, I'll hit the news stand at lunch. Besides eBay, Hemmings, Autotrader, and my local papers, are there any other recommended sites with lots of car ads? If this tactic doesn't work, I will then likely step up to legal action, either of the small claims type or the "you don't pay unless you win" type. Let's hope that getting flooding with faxes for a month or so will change their minds. Thanks again. As long as your new family member wasn't horribly abused or neglected by uncaring previous owners, sounds like you found a wonderful example to get you addicted to diesel Benzes. That is possibly one of the best models of "modern" diesel Benzes ever, with the possible exception of the 300CD coupe and larger 300SD sedans that used the same turbodiesel engine. Be sure to get your hands dirty with this one. You will probably find that the more you work on it, the more amazed you are at the engineering that went into it. Just don't ask John for his opinions on the familial origins of the engineers involved with the vacuum systems. ;-) Hope you become another convert. Had some weird issues with the climate control: blew hot air all the time, no matter what the setting. John (and others) on the list suggested cleaning or replacing the fuses. IIRC a complete fuse set was $20 or so. opened up the fuse box, blew out 20 years of accumulated rust and dust, replaced all the fuses: problem solved. the cheapest and easiest climate control issue I have ever had to fix. - -- jack "Take care of yourself and each other" - -- Ken Saucier, aka Bronze4922. 1963-2004, RIP ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 03 Dec 2004 15:38:47 -0500 From: "Michael Aimino" Subject: Re: [db] OT: 87 GMC Diesel 4x4 Suburban for sale > I wish this were closer... It had climate control, with a temperature chosen on the dash, in degrees F. No computer! Well, sort of. It had an inside temperature sensor and an outside temperature sensor. These were in a loop going to a solenoid that controlled a vacuum. The controlled vacuum went to a bellows. The bellows was mechanically linked to a round thing that could rotate back & forth. The round thing was full of vacuum passages. A cap on top had vacuum hoses that went to all sorts of interesting things. Also, I think there was a round switch under the round thing. Basically, one end of the rotation ( of the round thing ) was max cool - the other end was max heat. Depending on the existing internal temperature, the temperature that you selected on the knob, and the existing external temperature, the round thing would assume a position, as commanded by the bellows. And the hoses on top, and the switch wafers on the bottom would turn things on and off, open & close flaps, and maintain the cabin temperature to within a degree or so of whatever you selected.
