[1] between taking a half day off from my hourly no benefits contract programming job, renting a cargo van, and paying the suprise storage charges, this is going to cost more than buying locally would have, it's taken longer to get, and my aggravation levels are much higher than they would have been. i'm not saying that you shouldn't buy something like this off of ebay, i'm just suggesting doing better research than i did. the wrong shipping company can make it a pretty miserable experience. richard [1] their concept of a delivery appointment is "sometime during business hours on the day of your choice". today, the phone company at least narrows it down to morning or afternoon, and for large appliance deliveries, sears will call you at a designated number 4 stops early so you can get home before they do. by comparison, the customer service person at overnite had zero interest in the notion of "getting it done", no real concern over whether or not i ever got my shipment, and nothing at all in the way of ideas that might help with the situation. at times it seemed like she was taking some care to make sure that everytime i made a step forward, there would be a corresponding step back. - -- Richard Welty rwelty-at-averillpark.net Averill Park Networking 518-573-7592 Java, PHP, PostgreSQL, Unix, Linux, IP Network Engineering, Security ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Dec 2004 07:28:00 -0800 From: Greg Fiorentino Subject: Re: [db] How to Re-Condition Alloy Wheels mfrank-at-westnet.com wrote: Porosity is caused by gases in the molten metal being entrapped when it cools. You end up with microbubbles in the casting. You can't change the porosity of a casting by abrasion. If the casting is porous, it's porous through and through. Wheels are usually cast using techniques which minimize porosity. The reason is that porous castings can be very weak. The wheels may be made with a vacuum process, the sand is selected and prepared to allow outgassing, the mold is designed to allow gasses to rise out before the metal hardens, and the mold may be preheated to prevent the metal from cooling too quickly. If all of this isn't sufficient to minimize porosity, the wheel should have been rejected at the foundry. Aluminum and magnesium are about the most reactive metals commonly used in automotive application. They will corode into powder faster than any steel if left untreated. If the part isn't exposed to salts or weather, the aluminum will form a natural oxide skin which is sufficient to prevent corrosion from humidity. If it's only occasionally exposed, you can protect the surface with a coat of very light oil, or ACF50 if you happen to have access to aircraft chemicals. Anodizing can keep it pretty for a while. But if the part will be exposed to salt, the best solution is paint. Simply strip the wheel with a chemical stripper.Wipe it off with zylene. Then prime & paint. Save the abrasives for buffing out damage. Mike Frank When you cast and machine alloy you leave the pores wide open, thus letting water and all kinds of stuff into the metal, and we all know that when water gets into alloy it starts to grow(that white powdery stuff). So the first thing we have to do when polishing is to close off the pores, and you cant do this with sand blasting. To raise another question: My SDL has chrome-plated alloy wheels (which I don't like as much as the spoked style wheels). One of the wheels has a slow leak caused by sop plating chips at the bead. Tire dealers have told me that the only solution is a new wheel. I would like to avoid that spendy solution! Any ideas or BTDTs? info on line at:
http://wagoneers.com/AMSOIL/
you can either follow the link to the corporate website or call,
if you link from there the customer number (283461) ensures I
get the "sale". Almost enough to buy lunch if you convert your
entire vehicle over. ;) (don't worry, no plans on buying a yacht
or quitting the day job. ;)

If you drill down into the current amsoil website you'll find
the specs and what standards the oil currently meets. I'm
sure I've seen the mercedes stnd referenced before... I'm using
the HD 5w30 Synthetic Diesel in my '91 300D. I've also used
the HD 30W and the 15W40 Marine Grade 100% Synthetic Diesels Oils
over the years.
