And, the really confusing part, there are two allen head bolts on each side of the mount, one is almost imposible to get to. How do we undo both of those, and how do we lift the engine, what should we disconnect. We have everything set up but are in a "dont know what to do" jam. I thought I had it tracked down to the Alternator Brushes/Voltage regulator. Replaced that, battery shows 14.5 volts at idle with new brushes, so it seems OK. Battery is 2 year old DieHard. Symptoms continue: Won't start, starter slows down and battery drains quickly. Tentative diagnosis: Shorted glow plug. Manual says this is possible with this slow-glow system wired in series. As soon as I have the battery charged, I will try to glow while measuring the voltage drop across each plug. Manual says I need to ream the prechamber as part of changing plugs. It would seem prudent to do so if coking is causing a short. Any thoughts or suggestions? TIA (I have started using Thunderbird instead of Eudora, and haven't figured out sigs yet.) I just priced the reamer...for the pencil type plugs (as in the newer cars) they're $50. For the loop type ( which is in the '79 TD) they are $150! Yikes! It would be cheaper to have the shop do it. We seldom get freezing weather here. The car is garaged and it has never been much of a problem (until now). The extra few seconds is not a big deal. I have been under the impression (possibly wrong) the the slow glow was more reliable if slower. Thanks for the response. No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. They are different. It may be the reason some people complain that the cheap, after-market mounts they bought were lousy, didn't last long. When ready to lift the engine, put a block of wood between the jack and oil pan and gently raise engine just a bit. You should loosen but not remove big bolts on both sides. Then, raise engine slightly, remove/replace mount on one side, tighten allen head bolts and start the big bolt. Next do the other side. Finally, tighten both big bolts. It's a pain if engine moves out of alignment in the process (which will likely happen if you remove both mounts at same time). The allen head bolts are a bit tricky. Soak with penetrating oil first (I like PB Blaster--available everywhere, better than many similar products). Clean out bolt head and make sure allen wrench is fully seated before trying to turn bolt. If you insert wrench only part-way, you can strip bolt head--the results are less than fun. You probably need to disconnect the engine shock absorber. Buy a set of bushings for that. They are very cheap. The shock lasts almost forever but the bushings die and defeat function the shock absorber. You may have to loosen fan shroud, too. Maybe not. You don't have to lift engine much at all to remove old mounts, maybe a tad more to put in the new ones. Have fun. This is a relatively easy job, but tricky enough to give you a sense of accomplishment when done. The resulting smoothness makes it a very satisfying job, too.
