For $2500, plus the cost of the W123 and transportation, I could arrive at the gate to your house driving a "beater" and leave with an almost brand new car. But wait! With a little incentive, like a trip to a party town, I could talk one of the crews into flying down your way. Last year, the front pulley got loose at the end of the crankshaft on my w123 300d, so I went to the workshop to have it tightened. Turned out the assembly cone on the crankshaft had been damaged, c-shaft had to come out to be built up and turned. So, as the car was consuming oil, I decided on a complete engine overhaul. As the tranny had been a bit rough this was also taken apart completely, and rebuilt. Since the body shell was not any use while this went on it was towed away to a body shop, stripped bare, all glass bits removed to check for corrosion under the rubbers, all minor dings and bumps filled in, and respayed. At the end of it all it cost me the equivalent of $2500, for both parts and labor. FWIW, the 87 300D I brought back from TN has a Rusty rebuilt transmission in it, had about 80k on it when I bought the car, and it still shifts great. I think rusty wants somewhere in the neighborhood of $2k for them (sans core) - last price on one I got was for a 722.4 from a 190D 2.2 for about $1800. Two year (unlimited miles) warranty, shipping is free one way and IIRC $75 the other. Not a sales pitch, just happy with the one I have that someone else put in :) K ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Dec 2004 23:11:36 -0600 From: Jon Filina Subject: Re: [db] 2 Things Fixed :) John was ready to roll and wrote: >>-->Do you have a landing strip there? Average per year not very high. Wiard I don't recall them selling any US spec S124s with the 602 turbo (90-93) or the 606 NA (95). This leaves you with the infamous 87 300D, like the white one that currently terrorizes the bay area and salinas valley corridor of US 101 :) Basically, you're buying what would be called a "one of" - provided it's a US spec, there were less than 1600 87 300TDs imported stateside, and people generally unrealistically jack the prices up because of this. The 147hp six banger turbo is hard to NOT find a buyer for. All that aside, I cannot answer your question better than pointing you to http://buying.articles.mbz.org/checklists/124 If there's anything on that checklist that doesn't make sense, let me know, I have the sedan version. I can't remember if that checklist identifies something to check about the [citroen style] auto-levelling suspension in the rear, but if the car isn't level going down the freeway, this might be expensive :) 200k is nothing for an 87 300TD, my monster has around 346k on the chassis. Since it's not a daily driver, Derick's 85 190D can race it to 500k. I'm pretty sure Derick will beat me, even with my head start :) Anyways, at 200k, if it has been taken care of, suspension isn't a worry either (drive test and tire wear will point to this - if the car doesn't track straight, there is a LOT it could be), and the trans, if taken care of, should last past 250k. If there's service records, glance over them to make sure they seem reasonable for the car you're getting, and if they show the car has been taken care of, go for it :) K ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Dec 2004 22:25:18 -0300 From: "Renaud (Ron) Olgiati" Subject: Re: [db] 2 Things Fixed :) On Monday 27 December 2004 02:11, Jon Filina wrote: > Let's see...A C-130, fueled, with crew, two MB's, John and me, should > weigh 85,000-90,000 lbs.
