They had a law that if you were exceeding 80mph (130kph) that you were partially at fault. I spent a lot of time cruising at 90 to 115mph in my Mustang... not too many vehicles ever went past me. I'm sure that the 124 Diesel would be quite happy on the Autobahn... the 123 & 126 Diesels would do fine... but your 126 tops out at 108mph and most of the 123's a bit less. I had my 126 up to 100mph once and it did fine... tried to get it the rest of the way but just didn't have enough room. :) What's interesting is that the '91 300D only has a 2.5L TD... but it's faster and has a higher top end then the 3.0L TDs in the 123/126. What's really won my heart is the 31 mpg in town in a vehicle that is as comfortable as my 123 or 126's, handles better and has less influence by Rube Goldberg. Of course there are a few downsides... but not as many as you might think... the ignition lock is a weak spot at 175,000 miles... uh, let's see, what else? uh... nothing... :) oh yeah, and it gets almost 40mpg on the highway... if i lived some place as flat as Georgia I'd get a lot better mileage... got 39.75 going over the pass to Spokane... I've been giving some thought to building a Mercedes powered Diesel XJ... was thinking about the 3.0L 5 cylinder like in yours... but the more I think about it I'm going to price out used 3.0L 6 cylinders and these 2.5L 5 cyl TD's... I'm finding that the parts for the 124 aren't as bad as they once were... thankfully there are a lot of 124's out there so body pieces and such are available. I've got a nice '83 300D sitting in the drive... there are many things I like about the 123 (and 126), but the better economy and performance and the more reliable functional parts on the 124 will probably keep me from going back. I have had a few crazy thoughts about this '77 300CD... v8 swap... restore... upgrade to TD... drop the body onto the '83 GMC Jimmy 4x4 chassis complete with the 6.2L Diesel... weld on springs from an XJ and axles and then drop the 6.2L into the 300CD and make it a 4x4 Diesel 300CD... but time, friends and family have prevented me from such a radical undertaking... :) john >--> >--> >-->Robert Chase >--> >--> >-->john wrote: >--> >-->>On Sat, 1 Jan 2005, Robert Chase wrote: >-->> >-->> >-->>>-->I dunno John Im not really sure it would be "fun" to drive a diesel on >-->>>-->the autobahn.....
