Heh heh, Lets have this conversation again in lets say another 200-300k miles. If performance is something that you like have you checked out the new E diesel? Its supposed to have a lot of power for a diesel engine. There is a European Model S class that has a V8 diesel as well..... I think we both have different priorities with what we look for in a car...... I look for longevity and luxury in a car and you seem to look for fuel economy and performance which are two things that are nice but not a high priority for me..... I would still love my car even if it only got 10mpg as its comfortable and reliable and has a low overall cost of operation...... A 124 would be nice for me but how many anti capitalistic dictators ride in anything less than an S class sedan? I pay 138.80 for forty gallons, it's actually 3.40 a gallon, or so. I think you get another ten cents off per gallon if you buy in 100 gallon increments. I don't know why the other per gallon figure was stuck in my head. Off the top of my bald head I would say that you don't have the version of "libfontconfig.so" that Mozilla is looking for. I don't know what distro version you are using, but would guess that it's old. Gnome is up to version 2.8... If you are using a relatively new version of Mozilla, chances are that it's expecting to see newer libraries than the ones you have on your system. John is our resident Unix guru, but he's a bit single minded when it comes Linux. He expects it to work perfectly out of the box, while some of us expect to have make corrections... ;-) John's Suse setup is fine by me. I like Suse, but don't know how Novell is going to change things. They've screwed up in the past, so who knows. Suse, Mandrake and Redhat, among others, have had a bad habit of putting config files in strange places and linking them together in such a manner that makes it extremely difficult to make changes. They do it so that any changes to your desktop you make are reflected in all the other desktops that are on your system. Finding the right file to change, in the absence of a GUI solution, is extemely frustrating. For that reason, I run Slackware with the KDE desktop. I run Slackware 8.1 (yeah...it's a little old) and KDE 3.0. I like Gnome, but it's user interface is not as uniform as the KDE one. I prefer XFCE, but haven't used it for awhile. The problem you are having is not limited to Gnome as John would like you to believe. Under KDE 3.0, the "native" KDE CD player doesn't work on my system. I'm using GnomeCD and it works fine. Mozilla works just fine, but I can't open up Mozilla Mail directly like I could under earlier versions. I have to start the Mozilla browser and then the mail client. I assume if I ran the separate components, Firefox and Thunderbird, I wouldn't have that problem. I've stayed with Mozilla because it's worked fast enough for me on my system. In your case, you might have to upgrade your distro to get Mozilla working correctly. If the actual filename of "libfontconfig.so" that Mozilla is expecting is different (like ...so.1) you may be able to copy it to the proper directory, but I don't think that would work. Or...you could install Linspire 4.5, pay $60 a year for access to the CNR warehouse, and have a system that's as easy to maintain as Winders and is as reliable as Linux. I've considered that option but would have to put a brown paper bag over my head so nobody could see it was me using a dumbed down version of Linux... It does have it's merit's though-Linspire, not the paper bag... OR...you could go change your the oil and filter on your MB cuz' you've left it in too long like I have... The reason I ask is that I called MB Literature dept. and they said that I must have a Windows machine to use the CD. But, I do not have a windows machine available. Question is, > are the CD based manuals such as the one above, viewable using only > linux? First off, the item on eBay you mentioned appears to be a paper manual. I have the CD version for the W126's, but would prefer the hard copy version. The price, even at $35, appears to be a good deal. There is an alternate source for "shop manuals" for your W124's available from Robert Bentley Publications. Stu Ritter, the co-founder of the other MB list I take, wrote the "124 Bible". It probably costs about the same. As for the CD, yes, you can view it using Linux, but "some assembly" is required. > The reason I ask is that I called MB Literature dept. and they said > that I must have a Windows machine to use the CD. But, I do not have a > windows machine available. The guy I spoke to did not seem to know > much about the underlying mechanism used for displaying the pages. From what I have found out, MB really didn't want to release a CD version of their manuals for the older models. They appear to have discontinued the printed manuals for, at least, the W126 chassis and probably the W124 and W201 ones. A lot of pressure was put on them and they reluctantly produced a CD version. They combined a few of the hard copy manuals and priced the CD at around $130. That was cheaper than the equivalent printed manuals, but way too expensive as far as I'm concerned. But, yes, I have W126 CD and am $130 poorer... If the drone in the MB Literature department had been halfway knowledgeable, he'd have told you that the CD requires that you are running Internet Explorer (hence, "Windows"), Shockwave (Flash player) and Adobe Reader. I usually boot into Windows to view the CD, but have viewed the .pdf files with "ghostview" or "Kghostview". IE and Flash are just window dressing. You will need a .pdf reader to access the files. Unfortunately, there is no index on the CD which is plain stupid, AFAIC. If there was, you could copy the index to your Linux drive, update the file locations using your favorite text processor and directly access the CD. Since no index is available, you'll have to copy the HTML files to your hard drive, add in the path to all files (/mnt/cdrom on my system) either for each .pdf file or in a system variable, and strip out any references to IE or Flash. It's a pain in the backside, but it will work. There is an index file available on the net, but it's in zip format and would have to be modified to use on Linux. Have I tried the above? No... But it should work. Does that answer your question? Jon '84 300SD "Bruno" ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #1685 **********************************
