The glowplug relay is probably ok as it just controls the > timing and keeps the plugs warm during the engine warmup cycle...... *** It could be stuck "ON". That would seriously limit plug life. - Jerry Kaidor ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Jan 2005 09:46:30 -0500 From: Paul Brown Subject: [db] 300D starting isues My 1980 300D won't start. My progeny wore the battery down trying. The glow pluig ready light comes on and turns off as usual. Engine cranks, but doesn't catch. I changed the fuel filters. No change. Should the glow plugs be warm to the touch after a glow cycle? They're stone cold. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Jan 2005 09:46:27 -0500 From: Robert Chase Subject: Re: [db] could it snow? Hmmm, When it snow's here in Atlanta (which is once in a blue moon) I have always noticed that the big heavy 4wd trucks are on their roof's on the sides of the road........ The last heavy snowfall we got here was on new years a few years ago...... A couple of my friends with 4wd cars/trucks could not do anything with them and called me to warn me to stay home..... I had no food so I had to go out and my Volvo handled it perfectly without even a hitch.... I even brought some food to my friends house and parked in his ice covered heavily sloped driveway which his BMW with traction control could not get up....... When I purchased the car it had bad glow plugs... I purchased a full set from The Benz Bin. They were Monarch brand plugs. EVERY plug failed within the first 6 months. I kept returning them as they failed and got BERU's in exchange. NONE of them failed. Now I'm not bashing The Benz Bin or Monarch. Just telling the story as it happened. But that experience has taught me to install ONLY BERU glow plugs from wherever you can get them from. YMMV... Good luck... Im lucky that I have a local source of parts and don't have to deal with poor service from mail order parts houses..... You would be surprised even the "mc parts" store like Autozone and others stock high quality german parts for our cars these days...... And at pretty good prices as well.... When I was buying my brake calipers I got my best deal at Autozone as they have better buying power than the smaller mail order places..... And I did not have to bother with "mailing" the cores back...... Robert Chase Jim Hoffman wrote: >Sean, > > Here's my story with my '83 240D... When I purchased the car it >had bad glow plugs... The hood looks like it is bent a little and the trim at the bottom of the headlights is bowed in. This may explain the presence of a newer style grill. Also I noticed the clearance between the hood and fender is not equal on both sides. Too bad I am not close enough (due to schedule) to look at it. What do ya think? Interesting shadow on the front left marker light. I thought that front grill looked odd. I don't pay much attention to the 190s. High mileage also.
