Also full of soot. I have a good replacement, but haven't gotten around to replacing it. An EGR on a diesel is a dumb idea anyways because feeding soot back into the intake is not good for it. Bypass is easy. Keep the electrical connections intact to the vacuum pod. The signal to open and close will be there, and the computer will be happy. Disconnecting the vacuum lines and bypassing is all that needs to be done. I totally agree, even on my NA 190d's both of the EGR valves in the two engines I rebuilt where clogged with soot. Have not pulled the one in service since the rebuild but now I am curious... :) Derick - -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Probably something with a centripetal clutch or something, like the formula 500 race cars use, or an automatic transmission anything that's a few pints low on fluid - the torqueflight in the hornet fell out of gear if your foot wasn't on the throttle. After thinking of the EGR..... Thoughts of other obstructions in the engines I have rebuilt. The crankcase vent tubing. Both 190d engines where completely clogged. Like plaque on arteries. Had to replace the rubber parts and clean out what was left in the rigid tubes. Totally disgusting. Have stopped eating big Macs ever since in fear of having my arteries clog up in a similar fashion. ;) Kevin, I did not check this in your 190d you may want to check into it when you have the time. My '83 GMC Jimmy with a tired 6.2L Diesel does better... in town and towing my trailer! The '99 WJ does better than this little Ford, and that was crossing a 4,000 foot pass in full time 4wd! I almost ran out of gas in new hampshire... about the time I was taking a picture of the Moose Crossing sign. :) I think it averaged about 18mpg according to the computer. My son's '87 XJ gets 20 to 21 mpg on the freeway... and almost all of this adventure was open highway, gentle hills and light traffic. My benz would have done mid to upper 30's. Beautiful countryside, even though it was pretty bare. Only at the 42nd parallel... interesting... thats around the same level as southern oregon, northern california... (the 45th parallel is on the north edge of Salem, OR) Well, missions accomplished... both... (set the server up on Friday, minor tweaking left on Monday - the reason for me to be here.) And the second; I visited all the new england states in one day... and met up with two folks from the lists... MA, RI, CT, VT, NH, ME --- all in one day. :) so, that leaves just Alaska and Louisiana that I haven't been to. I'm happy to not go to the latter, but am already researching the AlCan highway... :) Trying to figure out which vehicle to use or build. ;) Anyone travelled the Alcan in the last few years? Looks like September might be a good time to drive the Alcan... will probably take the ferry back to Seattle... only know two folks that have driven it... :) later, john '91 300d 2.5l TD '99 WJ 4.0L '83 GMC 6.2L '83 J10 stepside 4.0L ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Jan 2005 08:47:01 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: [db] Re: fsj: Transmission and transfercase info links On Sun, 16 Jan 2005, Jim Blair wrote: http://www.drivetrain.com/ cool website... looks like some good information, thanx Jim! john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Jan 2005 09:17:52 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: RE: [db] all of new england in one day... I'll be landing around 11:30, American... have to go to work Tuesday, but not until I get plenty of sleep. ;) I almost had to drive my GMC Jimmy... our drive was still icy/snow covered, made it out, only got sideways twice... :) would have been ok to drive the 6.2L Diesel except for two things... it was low on Diesel (takes $65 to fill) and it doesn't have comprehensive/theft coverage, meaning if someone vandalized it or stole it I'd be eating the loss... my benz is 100% covered, but much harder to replace... thanx for checking in on shadowfax. :) Surely would have like to have had him here with me for this adventure... :) It was pretty funny, talking to Fred about getting a side-by-side picture of our very similar 300d's together... then it dawned on me that wasn't really possible... Fred humored me... realizing that I'd been a bit sleep deprived... :) Besides, his '91 300D doesn't have heated seats or ASD, and his pin stripes have a blue line, I think mine have a gold line... will have to check again... :) >-->Nice NE pictures. thanx... quick snapshots, really didn't take the time to get out of the car to freeze and work on taking proper pictures. :) I should have taken time to work on nice pictures of some of the old buildings, but I knew I'd be pressed for time... got back to the hotel at almost 10pm local time... I slept until 11am local time today. :) Actually, it was too long, got a headache from it. ;) Going to head out later today and find my way back to the customer's site, then figure a way to the airport so I can make a clean escape tomorrow... I'm still undecided if Boston is worse than Seattle or not... I've lived in the Seattle area for 20 years now, and still have trouble downtown... Boston is as bad as I've heard as well... :) Driver's here aren't as rude as some of the places I've been though... of course I've only been out late at night and on the weekend... will learn more of their behavior on the way into work tomorrow. :) And yes, I will be happy to be back in our corner of the states... New England is every bit as nice as I've heard. I could probably even live here if it came to it. But the Pacific Northwest has pretty much been our home since about 1977. I love the Seattle area for it's incredible beauty. No place like it in the states... we have a wonderful mixture of mountains, ocean and scenic wonders... also have terrible traffic, more than our share of liberals and other natural wonders that "shake" us up a bit from time to time. :) But we won't be falling into the ocean at least, we're getting pushed up onto the continent... ;) And, I don't count our lack of sunshine as a bad thing... that bright object in the sky is overrated. ;) As long as I can see those snow covered mountains, I'm happy. :) later, john >-->Later >-->Derick ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** http://wagoneers.com ** ** http://freegift.net ** Snohomish, Washington USA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Jan 2005 10:12:22 -0800 (PST) From: Jerome Kaidor Subject: Re: [db] Admin: Hey Gang Sam Williams wrote: > > Jerry, > > Probably a DKW -- they were so popular in the states. I cannot find any visual clues to where it might be leaking. I do not get a coolant smell in the cabin or film on the windsheild that would indicate I have a heater core problem. I do not get any fluids under the car when parked. Oddly enough, my low coolant light usually comes on it is after the coolant has warmed up and I've been driving a while. I'd figure it would be more likely to be low when cold and not expanded. Anyways, I'm wondering if perhaps it's time to replace the expansion tank cap. I'd had vehicles where the cap failed and couldn't maintain pressure, and coolant would blow off while driving and the system would be low. It also appears that when the car is cold the coolant system is under vacuum. Is this normal for this car? Anyway, would this be a good first step? Maybe the tstat as well? Anything else to look for?
