My wife and I moved up here a year ago. Looks like a bunch of you are fairly close by! Now that I've been reading the list for about a month, I figure I should introduce myself and my car. :) My car and I (and my wife!) live in Lynnwood, WA. My car is a 1976 240D (I think it is a 115, as the VIN starts with 115?). My mom had it initially, I learned to drive with it, then I took it to college and have been driving it regularly ever since. It went through 17 winters in Long Island [New York] (including a few ice storms) and central New Jersey (college) before the last 10 years in the San Francisco area (where the sun and birds really began to do a number on the trunk and roof paint, unfortunately). It has been starting to increasingly have problems over the past couple of years, but I am hoping to at least get it to 30 years old. (Only has about 123,000 miles on it!) Hopefully this list and the folks on it can help me get it there (and maybe even longer) without spending an arm and a leg. :) Just paid about $600 to get Barrier Motors (in Bellevue) to replace the starter ($120/hour labor - - -- 3 hours to check and replace thee starter?), so any suggestions for cheaper (and closer) mechanics for both cars greatly appreciated. - - -bkc '76 MB 240D (no real nickname, although was known as the 'lime limo' back in high school) '00 MB ML320 ('Mel') ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2005 14:38:31 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: RE: [db] another newbie On Wed, 19 Jan 2005, Black, Waylon wrote: >-->Ahh - the joys of visiting a stealership. >--> >-->123K miles? Sorry, Fred, I've never tackled this fix. I probably need to as I smell a little bit of anti-freeze right after the fan starts to blow but it dissipates quickly. I just read the instructions from the repair CD for an '82 300D. It appears that you need to remove just about everything except the dashboard. Floor mats, center console, covers under dash, drain water, disconnect heater hoses, remove glove box, remove both rear air ducts, holding straps for air box, connecting hoses, connection lever for fresh air flap, plugs, electrical connections, bowden wire from blower switch and main air flap, angle brackets, and remove hose connections in engine compartment. It depends, also, on the type of climate control system that you have. Marc Z in NC Fred Scheel wrote: >Still looking for anyone with heater core R/R experience on a 123 chassis.
